Best Value New (Line) ADSL Package

G'Day gents; we stay in an older type flat that I believe previously had a Telkom line that is no more.

We have Afrihost Mobile Data which works well enough but we're running out earlier in the month out of the all-important GB's.

Finally looking at a more permanent (constant) ADSL option.

Is the Telkom all-inclusive Simple package; the best value? http://www.telkom.co.za/campaigns/simple-3/index.html

It incl Data; Line Rental; WiFi Modem & Line Installation (which we need) & some other perks that's not really needed but could be handy.

I would like to do the data component thru Afrihost but then the Line Installation & the fact I need a Modem all adds up.

Is the basic Telkom Simple package the value-answer & any okes on this package; what's your views?

While in the past i would never recommend a contract on Telkom, this has changed after seeing how much value they offer. Pick one that peaks your interest.

I have read recently with comments right here on mybb that Telkom are very generous when it comes to contract subscribers with rewards of some sort when renewing. You are also not locked in using them as an iSP but bare in mind that your ADSL line has to still be with them.

Night-Surfer is fantastic as you are virtually uncapped [limited only by your line speed] between 00:00 - 07:00am Mon - Sun. If you take for example the 20GB package, you just have to get by using that during the day.

Lastly, what do you see available when inputing your address here ADSL/VDSL/FTTH/LTE? Just to see what options may come about.

Seems Telkom stakes & perception have really increased in the past couple of yrs.

ADSL will be fine for me needs but the "bonus" midnight data sounds good as well.

I only have a Netbook; no PC or Laptop that can be used for the incl WiFi Modem; is a Netbook practical?

And if the Netbook goes into hibernate does it mean the ADSL WiFI connection drops?

I believe it may drop the connection but you need to check your documentation. Your connection is still alive on the modem if configure like that so any other devices can connect .

Tablets are getting affordable somewhat so in addition to having a netbook, you can keep an eye on the Hardware Bargains thread when specials popup but as far as practical, you may only know this once you see how much you missing when having more data .

You will discover Netflix among other things so having more than a Netbook may become a necessity later on .

1. Now you don't have a "bundle" anymore... this kinda screws things up. and makes it more expensive i would guess, too.
2. Why...just why not Telkom, anyway? I honestly don't see the point of actually getting everything from telkom except the data...why? Telkom is awesome and has the best AUP!

Thanks for that; we actually have 2 iPads & a couple of smartphones as well. When I meant to say I only have a Netbook; I mean only that single device that talks to the modem at the connection stage.

IMO no need for Netflix for me; I have other...err methods of accessing latest movies & series

Just been very pleasantly surprised with AH over the past 18months that I've been with them.

I value good service

But true having line with Telkom & data with AH does make things more pricey even more so (initially) where I don't have a modem & still need the line installation.

Out of curiousity, do Telkom have any offers for home clients that are equal to the Afrihost Business Uncapped, i.e. unshaped and unthrottled, even on P2P?

Okay so my new line was installed today; took he basic "Simple" Package for the all-inclusive R399pm; 2mbps & 10gb is fine for the two of us. Installation went without a hitch & ADSL setup was easy courtesy of the Telkom how-to guide. No need to contact the call centre at all.

Router seems like a decent quality Netgear one.

Speed is good & stability is tops; I'm a happy camper.

The only thing is; for the life of me I can't recall when I signed up at the Telkom Direct store if I needed to enter my Bank details...

Do I say nothing & just wing it lol

Those charges will be on your Telkom (telephone/ADSL) account, faster than you can say "wing it", again.

If I were you, I'd register for Online Bill and/or the option to receive your account via e-mail.
The post, as we all know, is too unreliable - Telkom don't hesitate to charge interest, so if you rely on only receiving your a/c via the post, and you get it late, then interest will follow for 'late payment' on your subseq. a/c's.

That is, assuming you aren't paying via debit order.
