Hi Guys,

Looking at the various SUVs available and it seems like it its been a difficult choice to make. I have the following on my list so far:

  • Renault Duster- Best value, seems to lack refinement and comfort?
  • Nissan Qashqai- Seems cool but smaller
  • Nissan X-trail- Good deals on the petrol but worried about fuel consumption
  • Hyundai IX35/Tucson- Seem to be more on the expensive size
  • Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4- Both are more expensive that the rest

I am also concerned that the above largely have a warranty and service plan but not a full maintenance plan. Coming from a full motor plan I am worried about the unforeseen costs that are not covered by the warranty. Any ideas or opinions will be appreciated

Recently bought a Mokka X and I've been most impressed with it.

Nissan, Hyundai, Honda and Toyota I don't think you should worry about maintenance plan with those cars.

Have a look at a low mileage demo if budget is too tight to go brand new. Then add Mazda CX5 to your list.

Is this due to reliability being better or cost of parts being less than the germans with full motor plans

+1

Drove the Rav4 on a less-than-ideal gravel road. It felt solid and handled the moderate suspension twisters fairly well.

Read also Car magazine's 20,000km review of the manual version in the May 2017 edition.

I would suggest Vitara if you want new otherwise go for a used Mazda CX5

Like the Baleno is seems to do everything well and is hassle free. Its infotainment system is not the best in its class but what the hell, its a car and not an arcade toy.

I have a 2.0 Petrol X-Trail. About two weeks into ownership, got it a brilliant price even though it was second hand. If I nurse it I can get 10.2km/l in town. But foot down driving sees it get to about 8-9km/l. On the open road 11-12km/l depends on how heavy your foot is.
Love the boot, the comfortable and quiet ride. Would have enjoyed PDC, but I seem to manage well with out it.

That's not too bad. Based on the numbers it seems what you save on fuel on the diesel you pay in installments so it balances out. Is the petrol cheaper from a maintenance perspective?

Mine we extended the service plan till 2021. But from what I saw it looks like the diesels have higher service costs, appeared to look almost double compared to service costs of the petrol models.

How does the extension work and what is the pricing? I saw some good 2016 x trails but with the service plan ending next year it seems an extension in needed

Got a three year till 120 000km service plan extension for R17000 car had 30 000km. 2015 model. Bought through a Nissan dealership.

The Qashqai seems to have some good deals

Is it however worth spending the extra R20k on the techno pack?

Depends what the techno pack includes locally. Is it all the stuff you would normally get in Europe as standard, or does it still fall short even after that pack? My t/diesel quackquack gives me 4.9l/100 on downhill 40+ km trips and about 5.9l/100 on uphill 40+ km trips. Around town about 6 to 7l/100.

Edit: In retrospect I should have got a double cab, no amount of boot space on these SUV's is ever enough.

The pack comes with heated front seats and mirrors, touch screen infortainment with Facebook and Google access, 360 degree parking aid.

And how's the maintenance cost? The services are covered but the rest of the wear items

Add Tiguan to your list for reliability, extra space, solid build quality and driving enjoyment

With the 1.6dci the tyres are 225/45 R19. If I recall those are around R4.5k each factory fitted brand. Believe they can be had at R2.2k each in other acceptable brands. Will try see if I have a service invoice nearby for examples of service wear items.

Any luck?

How does the rav4 compare to the qashqai? I would imagine Toyota maintenance cost are lower?
