Best way to get a Static IP

LIke the tittle suggest waht is the best way to get a static IP address?

I have looked at all the uncapped solution but it's very exspensive if you have to get a 1024kb connection.

Is there no other way to get a static IP?
 
What do you need a static IP for?

If you're only doing webhosting and no email hosting, then a dynamic IP will do fine.

However, should you want to do email hosting, then things are different.

I'm only doing web-hosting but I'm using dyndns at the moment and want to move over to a normal domain name.

As far as I know you cannot use a domain name with a dynamic IP or am I wrong?

You can use a domain name with a dynamic IP.

You can use any of dyndns.org's free offerings, or pay a bit extra, and have your own .co.za domain on a dynamic IP.

You still have to register your domain name tho, and you have to use an IP update applet to keep the IP stored in dyndns.org's database up to date.

I did quite a few domains with dyndns.org and dynamic IP's, and never had a problem so far (except that win2k3 and the dyndns.org service doesn't work quite as well together).

Well the way I understand it is if your IP address is changed it takes about 24 hours for all the dns server accross the world to be updated so as soon as all the servers are updated your IP address has changed again.

Real-time update takes about 1 to 2 minutes. Two of the servers which I administrate, disconnect and reconnect automatically every 12 hours - and the DNS servers update these fairly quickly.

I've also tested it at my house - the update process is fairly quick, so no need to worry about the "lag" period - it take less than 1 minute (telkom issues not factored in).

Thanks for all the replies so far.

It's good news that the DNS servers update quickly.

I have one more question.

Our mail is hosted by Hetzner so they have our domain name now if I want to setup a ftp server I log into their web interface and add ftp.company.co.za then I have to specify a static IP address.

Now if I have a dynamic IP address I would have to manually update the IP address on their site the whole time.

Any ideas?
