A friend of mine got his invite a few hours ago. He has played for many years and is in a semi active guild that also has its own website. He added some of that info to his application, so the theory that ANet are only taking complete noobs is false in this case.

Correct on the above assumption. A friend of mine that got an invite has been playing since GW1 first came out.
