Beware accepting your tax auto-assessment from SARS without checking its accuracy

Tax Consulting South Africa has warned taxpayers to think twice before accepting SARS’s auto-assessments of their tax returns.

The tax collecting authority has announced that it will assess around 3.1 million taxpayers automatically during August.

Head of Individual Tax Returns at Tax Consulting South Africa Thamsanqa Msiza said the impression that the automatic assessment of certain taxpayers means that they no longer need to worry about their tax submissions was incorrect.

Glad I didn't do the auto assessment i can wait another month.

If SARS deducts too much and the tax payer accepts without checking, will SARS get slapped with the same penalties as the tax payer who accepts an incorrect rebate?

(much rhetorical)

Another example of something that has the potential to work wonderfully well. But the usual individuals (culprits) are in charge...

It's true. My automatic processing sms was for a payment of R3300 but I didn't accept as I know it must be much more, I filed my own and there was a difference of R11000.

Honestly, if people GET A auto assessed and there is money due, I doubt people will re-do their tax returns, its a gamble of getting it or not because then you will be selected for auditing, so if there is free money, just accept and move on...

I guess there's more than 1 way looking at it. My opinion is if you do your tax yearly and know it's up to date, I believe there's no reason not to decline the automatic assessment and file your own return.

Somebody I know got an auto assessment notification that they will receive a refund of 0.18. There are two major issues with this - a) the person has not worked for many many years being a housewife and b) the refund amount is the exact same amount than the assessment they sent to me. Uhm yes, what are the odds of that happening. So I went into efiling, rejected it, and did a calculation. The system did not give me any calculation like in previous years. Seems like we are going backwards but then again this is good RSA.

It's heartsore this happened, I'm thankful my return went smoothly, I got my calculations immediately. Good luck

Opened the site, it took forever to load and then couldn't find anything issued for me. It might just have been overloaded at the time, I'll check again some other day.
