Paris - Press watchdog Reporters Without Borders urged media organisations on Friday to take care to protect female reporters from sexual assault while covering unrest in Egypt, following several serious attacks.

The group initially warned women journalists not to work in Cairo's Tahrir Square, epicentre of the revolt against Egypt's junta, at all, but after protests from press unions decided instead to advise great caution.

"It is more dangerous for a woman than a man to cover the demonstrations in Tahrir Square. That is the reality and the media must face it," RSF said.

"It is the first time that there have been repeated sexual assaults against women reporters in the same place. The media must keep this in mind when sending staff there and must take special safety measures.

"We are not saying the international media should pull out and stop covering events in Egypt, but they need to adapt to the threats that currently exist. Women journalists going to Tahrir Square should be aware of this situation."

For the past week Tahrir Square has seen mass protests and violent clashes between regime forces and pro-democracy campaigners demanding an end to trial by military tribunal and a faster transition to civilian rule.

On Thursday, French television reporter Caroline Sinz from the state network France 3 was subjected to a violent sexual assualt by a gang of young men and boys and her cameraman was beaten as they tried to cover the revolt.

It's only the radical ones who are not real Muslims. I think. something like that.
 
I don't want to be an ass but I found the way they treat woman there vile, this was before the riots

I'm sure its cultural or whatever but it was disgusting. They believe that western woman are rubbish an you can do whatever you want with them.

I suppose they believe thats how we treat our woman. They know its not the right way to treat Arab woman but obviously because we treat our woman differently its ok for them to treat them less then they would an Arab woman.

It seems like the police are also getting in on the act:

The U.S. journalist who was brutally beaten and sexually assaulted by Egyptian riot police as she covered the Tahrir Square protests has posted a photo online which shows both her arms in plaster.
New York-based Mona Eltahawy, 44, tweeted the picture, which shows casts on her broken left arm and right hand, to demonstrate the 'brutality' of Egyptian police.
She claimed they hit her with large sticks, groped her breasts and tried to push their hands down her trousers - before detaining her for 12 hours with 'no real reason'.

It should be common sense now if you from the west/European descent -- It is not a good idea to hang around areas where people are protesting in large mobs. Especially in countries where they don't like eu/us.

There is something called Gang mentality or mob mentality, basically those people involved in the Gang/mob start to believe they are invisible or they start assuming because they are in large numbers, it will be harder for them to be singled out and caught.

It should be common sense if you are women to stay away from those areas or go with your own mod/gang for protection.

No. It is and should be common sense for women of European descent(especially) to stay away from places where your home countries(EU/US) are not viewed as Heroes but viewed more as cancers to the emerging markets.

I think most of the general public realizes this but they are always a few "brave" souls that will do anything to report BS for money and unfortunately, getting kidnapped, molested or abused is always a possible outcome.

I think she's learn't how dangerous it is to be in public with a bunch of savage arab men that cant control their animal instincts.

What do you expect when their women aren't permitted in public without the garbage bag outfit.
