The Internet has changed the way people do things in the modern age but with the added convenience comes the flip side.

One the other side of the coin the Internet has also created opportunities for criminals, bullies and paedophiles to practice their trade in a new environment.
Today’s news leads with a 12 year old girl in Victoria, Vancouver being lured to the company of two adult men.

“This young girl had been talking to a man over in Victoria via the Internet. She had given her mom a story and didn’t return home that night and she contacted police in the morning,” reported The Province.

Another case in Australia of a former teacher grooming girls for sex also made headlines.

The Internet has not only created another playing field for criminals but we also have phrases like “Internet luring” and “Internet grooming” forming part of our verbal repertoire.

The reality is that the Internet is neither good nor evil it is just another medium that we as humans use to communicate and like everything, people need to use it wisely.
Common sense needs to be the order of the day and parents will need to keep a close eye on what their children are doing online.

But used correctly the Internet has far more potential to make our lives easier and more enjoyable.

So whilst the bogey man is definitely out there his name does not begin with www, he’s very much flesh and blood.
