Beware of Openweb ISP (Pty Ltd)

I activated a month to month service LTE SIM through OpenWeb ISP in mid February 2026. The SIM worked for a mere week after activation. It then stopped working during the first week of March 2026. The SIM could not be detected in any device (router or two phones) from the first week of March 2026. On 8 March I complained to support. I sent them photos, a video, and the ICCID (serial number of SIM) multiple times. We troubleshooted for days but they continued asking for the same troubleshooting over and over instead of replacing it or cancelling. They simply kept on kicking the can down the road. I then submitted a formal cancellation on 12 March 2026 via their website and email for a non working product and service. They only issued a cancellation reference number on 16 March and insisted on billing me until the end of April 2026, even though I never received any usable service since the first week of March 2026 (06/03/2026). I was billed for March and April 2026. They have violated my rights as a consumer by failing to provide a functioning product and service and continue to Debit. This company refuses to acknowledge my emails and do not answer the landline or support on whatsapp. One can not even visit a physical office. I am taking further steps. But let this be a warning to anyone doing business with OpenWeb. I should have done my due diligence before embarking on this nightmare of a company.

OpenWeb have been dodgy for years... about 8 or 9 years ago they got busted for doing a lot of dodgy **** if I recall.

They were super popular then basically crashed. Was more or less the same time CrystalWeb was around and everyone left them for Crystal's.

Assume its the same company

Thread 'Openweb MTN Mobile data - RUN!'

Since we lost Starlink, I'm forced to use MTN based mobile data here on our farm. We run 2 external routers, topping up data as we need.

I thought I'd give Openweb's MTN mobile data service a try. Signed up for their month to month uncapped (1TB) full speed service. The most I can get here is 30Mbps, for the record.

Got my SIM on the 17 Jan, worked at 30Mbps! Yippee. For all of 6 hrs, then speed dropped to 20Mbps. Tech support promised to sort it, but the line stayed 20Mbps. Then 10, then 5. This is with many tickets opened on their rather opaque ticketing system. And lots of promises of...

And, good grief, 'Crystalweb' ! How long ago was that?
This forum is making me feel old.
 
My neighbour won a Small Claims Court application against Supersonic ("S"). Just as dodgy as Openweb

S provided a SIM based router which did not work at all. It was an MTN SIM
Cancellation was effective
The router was returned via a Courier and signed for at S's office within 3 days
They continued to maintain they did not receive it and said the signature was false
The Courier co signed an affidavit to the effect that a person "Valerie" had accepted the parcel at S's office
S said Valerie no longer worked there and debited the neighbour's account with R2900
Neighbour instituted a SCC case and the Jhb South Sheriff delivered a summons
S paid the full amount the day prior to the hearing
