Guys, just a piece of advice when your 24 months contract ends and you wish to cancel. When cancelling at an MTN branch demand a copy of the cancellation document which you sign. I went in to cancel my contract at the beginning of March cant remember the exact date. Last week going through my bank statements I noticed MTN was still deducting money out of my account. I went to the branch on 20 May to query this and demanded a copy of the cancellation documents. I was told that the document had mysteriously disappeared. The next day I received a call from the branch to tell me that they had found the documents. I phoned the call centre and was told the contract was only cancelled on the same day I went in to query the account. The call centre said they received the cancellation dated 20 May from the branch.

What I believe had happened is that the cancellation documents where never sent through to the retentions department. The documents were then fraudulently altered by someone in MTN to appear that they were only signed on the 20 May. I then managed to get a copy from the branch with the date erased and a new date inserted being the 14 March. It seems like a common occurrence after reading all the similar complaints on Hellopeter. Will I be in my rights to open a charge of fraud with the SAPS. Any advice will be appreciated.

Good advice, I am sure you are not the first here.

Different scenario for me. I called customer care and asked them not to renew the contract. Once the end came, the SIM died. I was only billed one month after that, as I'd been billed one month late when I took out the contract.

Or, wait until your full 24 months are up then call through 808 free from an mtn cell number during normal working hours and ask to be transferred to retentions and an agent will do the full immediate transfer to prepaid for you, just as ling as you as fully passed your 24 months contract.

Weather you plan in using the sim or not, if not used for a period of 90days it does get fully deactivated - prepaid.

Yeah same happened to me. I am now being harassed and threatened by Shapiro Sheik Defries and Associates. Mentioned this in a thread recently and got a private message offer by MTN Legal Rep to look into it. I gave a detailed account of the situation and then was completely ignored.

This is what I did.
THATS WHAT I DID ... and see below:

I own 2x MTN contracts
One of which was due for its 24 month expiration/ upgrade on the 2nd of June 2014
On the 3rd of June I called the 808 help desk to facilitate in the following.
Downgrade and CANCEL my telephone number (in effect turn it into a pre-paid number)
I was then asked what I would like to do with the secondary SIM, linked to the main telephone number -
I instructed the callcentre to cancel this number as I no longer need it.
What was done :
My main telephone number ending in 3299 was cancelled
Secondary SIM ending in 3373 was made a pre-paid
I then called yesterday to check why this was actioned incorrectly, they stated that the 3373 telephone number was my main number - hence the change to it. (this is INCORRECT)

The instructions where NOT for this number - and this is NOT the main telephone number !!
Your phone systems should have this on recording

Last night I logged into the system, and noted that the secondary SIM had been UPGRADED to a
24MTH MTN Anytime 200 TopUp CONTRACT !

I have called again today, asking for clarity on the matter - and when "Themba" looked at the original reference number, he could not see the number 3299 even mentioned in the query ??
