Hi Guys

Anyone here a BI or SQL developer. Can you please explain to me exactly what your work consists of?
Would it be advisable for someone who has been working with like C# or Java and looking for some change to go with this route?

And also how is it different from Database Administration?

A DBA is responsible for the health and optimum running of a database. I.e. making sure that backups run. Planning and executing disaster recovery plans. Making sure that DB table stats are up to date. Long running queries are investigated. Also may assist the devs in tweaking a query as part of their dev responsibilities. The boundary varies from time to time. In some cases all SQL queries are developed by the DBA. DBA usually more of a support role

A BI / SQL developer is a fully fledged developer focusing on the back-end. I.e. designing/creating the tables, the stored procs etc. A BI developer will design and build the data warehouse / reporting table schemas based on what the business BI requirements are. BI databases usually sits alongside transaction processing databases to provide summary info and enriched info based on raw transaction data.

This makes a lot of sense...
 
Dont do it, You will be bored out of your mind if you are not a numbers guy.Stick to dev unless you dont enjoy it anymore.
 
Its also worth noting that BI development gets specialized into different technologies, so MS BI, Qlikview, Tableau, etc.

I don't enjoy it anymore... Don't know if maybe it's just the company that I work for that's making it so unbearable for me... So I was thinking of trying something new... Would you have any suggestions about what other avenues a not so young software developer can look into?

I'd rather learn how to build houses and become a brick layer
 
I believe that C# / Java developers are higher paid that BI / SQL developers.

Have you tried looking elsewhere for employment?
I would suggest you get into Android dev, there is a huge demand for them and they earn extremely well, higher than us C# devs.Dont go the BI route if you are programming, you will get bored to death.

Oh yes Android development... Didn't really think of that...
I am currently looking for employment elsewhere... I mostly have experience with C++ so there aren't many jobs for C++... So I'm now looking for C# positions...

Unless you really, really love SQL and working with lots of data in general, don't go the BI route.

It's perfect for idiots like me though!
 
Java is the go-to for corporates lately.
BI if you are good at it, can pay well if you move into Data Analytics and not boring report work.
C#.. lol it's C#.

Was a BI for a while. Enjoyed it as I got to learn a little more about the back-end.

If you have the brains, you branch out to data science and earn extremely well. Proper BI developers, with a good range of experience, get paid very well.
