Hi All,

I went bike shop in durban, looking to buy a bike rack for my car. I have a 2007 polo hatch. The car does not have a tow bar. The attendent told me if I buy a rack with straps for cars without a towbar, it would scratch the car really badly. He said I should rather install a tow bar then buy a rack to fit the tow bar. Is this really true?

I would rather buy the bike rack with out the tow bar, obviously to save the expense off fitting one. But I do not want to damage my car or my bike.

if the straps attach to the car then there'll be a good chance that the car will get scratched from friction...

Thanks Venomous.
I'm gonna go with a thule clipon 9103 - as per the thule catalogue for my car.
If anyone has had any problems with this rack, let me please.

Remember that with the straps you cannot open the hatch without taking off the bikes and all of this takes time. But, as tow bars are expensive, the straps will do the trick. As long as you are carefull when fitting it, the damage should be minimal.
