Yo!

I borrowed my friends bicycle the other day and went for an epic ride around the Atlantic Seaboard. I'm not a cyclist and by no means want to be. But I've decided that I want a bicycle to get some exercise as well as for an eco-friendly and convenient way to get around my area when the sun is shining. The only problem is that I've got no clue about bikes and what bike I should buy.

I've called a few bike shops in Cape Town and some are suggesting a Schwinn mountain bike - http://bit.ly/rsZlRa. My budget is around R4000-R5000.

My friends say I should get a hyrbid bike as they will suit my needs better. I know you can get hybrid wheels put on a mountain bike like the one above, but I'm not sure if I want to go with a mountain bike cos I honestly don't know if I will ever go mountain biking. I feel a hybrid bike will be more useful to me. And I don't want a fixie.

Can anyone please give me some information on which direction I should go in (mountain or hybrid) and possibly suggest some brands/bikes within my price range?

Thanks in advance :)

Hey Contact Mike Hewan at complete cyclist, they a JHB based shop that just opened in CPT, you can get a pretty mean bike for R4k to R5k. Don't go to cajees or cyclelab they'll just sell you crap.

Chris Willemse Cycles is also in the Cape.
They just opened a super store in Cape Town / Somerset West area.
Try thehubsa.co.za for contact details.

Schwinn is but one brand of cycle. There are many more that are just as good in the price range you mentioned.
Serfas is a relatively new brand in South Africa, although they have been available in Europe and Asia for a number of years already.
Momsen is a local brand that is gaining a reputation for reliability, good price and excellent service.
