This is a well written article, I agree with most of it but not all.

Respect to Biff

There are only two players called Graeme in the annals of South African Test cricket. In fact, one is named after the other. Both bat left-handed and both are renowned for hitting the ball with a controlled fury that suggests they never want to lay eyes on the offending orb ever again.

Pollock is the surname of one of these Graemes, and there will be no quibble that he is among the greatest players ever to pick up a bat - even though he earned just 23 caps for a team that purported to represent a country whose laws forbade, on racial grounds, trying to discover if batsmen better than or even as good as him were to be found within its borders.

The other Graeme is on the verge of playing his 100th Test. He has scored 8042 runs with 24 centuries for an average of 49.64. Currently he is ranked the tenth best batsman in the game but he has been perched as high as second in the past.

He has opened the batting in 96 of his 99 Tests and among active players only Virender Sehwag's 51.64 is a higher average than the 50.69 Smith has achieved when taking guard at the top of the order.

This Graeme has a higher career average as an opener than Sunil Gavaskar, Geoffrey Boycott, Gordon Greenidge, Desmond Haynes, Chris Gayle and Graham Gooch. He is the game's leading run scorer among active openers - Sehwag is eight runs behind him - and on the all-time list only Gavaskar, Matthew Hayden, Boycott and Gooch have been more prolific.

Despite having to take on fresh bowlers armed with a new ball on pitches at their juiciest, he has been part of 25 century stands, nine double-century stands, three triple-century stands, and a quadruple-century stand. That means he has helped push a partnership past three figures more than a fifth of the time he has gone out to bat. This helps explain why he has been run out only twice in his 174 innings.

50% of the time I want to punch him in the face, the other 50% think he is one of the best things to have happened to SA cricket.

Congrats Biff on your Century.

He is somebody that has a love hate relationship with the fans.

No doubting his ability...

I have especially loved his knock with Gibbs when we chased 434.

He is still has a good few years in him...

Talk is that he is coming back for the T20's

I fear that the impending birth of his child in addition to the complexities of playing in England will play on his mind.

i think it was that auro of arrogance in his initial days which has seen him become tpolarising at times. in recent years i have come to be a supporter of his.

well played to him.

Absolutely. He should have scored another double ton.

Always been a fan of his. You simply cannot argue with his stats...

Well done, Biff. Great knock. In the face of all that expectation and hype around this game, with the Poms making such a fuss of their bowling attack, he played well with Hash. Excellent knock.

One of the best ever captains and one of the players who scores when it matters. I am not going to drag up his 4th innings winning game centuries again etc

Good to see more support and not a lot of hate for the man. Hope his ODI form also holds.

There used to be a ton (pun intended) hate for Biff on this forum just last year and the previous years. I don't hear much of that now...

I think that maybe you are thinking of the calls to drop him from the ODI team. Their were some good reasons for those calls. He has responded well though and looks again like the smith of old with a tad less aggresion.

In my opinion the hate for Smith throughout his career has been unjustified and those that do get on his back are mostly ill-informed idiots. A case of it being ''in'' to get on his case.

I challenge anyone to look at his career stats and tell me he is a batsman worthy of criticism. A test average of 50 and an ODI average of 39 as an opener does not a cricketer worthy of hate make. For the record those numbers put him an average of 7 test runs and 6 ODI runs behind Kallis, unarguably one of the greatest batsmen of all time.

A lot of the hate I feel is because of his attitude. Yes he is borderline arrogant but he is also confident and it seems South Africans prefer modest sportsmen.

I think that's it.that oft repeated phrase 'he like to lead from the front' might be misconstrued as someone who will score all the runs for the team. The other players services are not required.

In stark contrast to Amla who always talks about his role and what it means to the team.

His decision to opt for Sweet Irish Pie instead of facing the music after the WC didn't help his cause either.

Lastly Smith never gets out to a good delivery. Its always some stupid technical error that sees him off.

He seems to be coming of age tho and will be much more admired and liked in the future.
