Johannesburg - Crime must be tackled and eradicated if Johannesburg wants to become a world-class city and South Africa a world-class country, says former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani.

When Giuliani took over as mayor of New York in 1993, the city was described as the crime capital of America.

In the following few years he succeeded in reducing the crime rate by between 50% to 70%.

"People want to feel safe, because if they don't feel safe they'll leave the city to spend their money elsewhere.

"The same applies to investors: they want to know that if they invest in Johannesburg or in South Africa, their interests will be looked after."

He said accountability was the key concept of any form of government:

"Whether it's local or national government, leaders must be held accountable for what they do, that's what democracy is about!

"If they produce results and keep promises, they must be elected again, but if it doesn't happen, they must be kicked out."

Wish this would start happening though.

South Africa got A LOT of potential but none of our ministers really care about going forward if they had ambition we could easly become world class. Instead they just try and get/take as much money as they can.

Johannesburg is a world famous city?

Wow, he only spent one day in SA. Busy man. Or perhaps he feared for his life.

It is prety famnous dude, whever i talk to people from outside of SA they know about Joburg and Cape Town.. oh and mendela..

Vensters the people in Guildwars I speak to about when they ask where I am from dont even know South Africa is a country but think I am joking and always reply " South Africa is a continent not a country"

But they do know Mandela and some know Cape Town.

Good advice from somebody that faced similar (But still quite different) problems and managed to solve them

Very good advice indeed, but wasted on the people who can do something about it as they don't see further than their pockets

Lions may roam the street, but I'm not sure that we have internet (or at least not proper internet).

Dont steal ! The government hates competition

ANC spends years fighting apartheid, leaders face death penalty are killed in detention and assasinated outside their homes. Thousands are killed indiscriminately, young and old alike.

All this to set up a transparent, democratic goverment and steal money?

yah, sounds like that battlefield earth movie - ridiculous.

ANC shouldnt be seen as the de-facto government. A one party system rarely leads to democracy.

Anyhow . . Rudy did a lot of good things for NYC - its now considered as being the safest of all the large cities in America thanks to his efforts. How'd he do it? Lots of cops.

bwana lots of cops wont work here because government dont really care whats happening. Look at the scorpions thing etc
I'm talking about a lot of police - close to 40,000 in a 830 km² area (JNB has a square area of twice that and CPT is 2,499 km²).

I can't tell you how often I saw cops playing solitaire on their laptops parked on the street side at 11pm in NYC. And how many are needed to stand on a street corner. And how many police cars are parked outside a tunnel with dudes in S.W.A.T. clothes and machine guns. And all their pretty horses in central park. and baricades around Wall Street. and..and..and..

But he fixed the place. Him and all the people that worked hard to solve the problem. Accountability is what did it also. You jump a ticket thingy in the subway, you get chased down by cops. You snag an old lady's bag, you get chased. You do anything suspicious, you get searched.

You can walk the city at anytime of day. It is great.

The thing is, it is rare for me to see a cop walk 'the beat' here in SA. You are lucky if they get out of their bakkies to do anything in the community. All they seem to do is patrol, patrol, patrol. I live in a little historical section of CT, and there is a police station right down the street. I would expect to see some guys walking around, just to show some pressence. But all I get is the bakkie at the Engine Quick Stop and the occasional drive by.

There is also an interesting article in the latest popular mechanics on the nypd anti-terror unit, it makes me wonder what we are going to be doing for 2010

Here it seams as if they wont even leave the station without a vehicle.

Tell them to stop playing games 24/7, get a life and read the world news once in a while. If they don't know what the 7 continents are then they are, for lack of a better word, dumbasses ;)
