Johannesburg - Crime must be tackled and eradicated if Johannesburg wants to become a world-class city and South Africa a world-class country, says former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani.
When Giuliani took over as mayor of New York in 1993, the city was described as the crime capital of America.
In the following few years he succeeded in reducing the crime rate by between 50% to 70%.
"People want to feel safe, because if they don't feel safe they'll leave the city to spend their money elsewhere.
"The same applies to investors: they want to know that if they invest in Johannesburg or in South Africa, their interests will be looked after."
He said accountability was the key concept of any form of government:
"Whether it's local or national government, leaders must be held accountable for what they do, that's what democracy is about!
"If they produce results and keep promises, they must be elected again, but if it doesn't happen, they must be kicked out."
Wish this would start happening though.
