Cape Town – A taxi driver has been convicted on a charge of reckless and negligent driving by the Bishop Lavis Magistrate's Court, following testimony by a City Ghost Squad officer.

The man was sentenced to a R10 000 fine or 200 days imprisonment last week and fined an additional R1 000 for being an unlicensed driver.

The taxi driver was one of six arrested by the Ghost Squad on September 27, 2016.

Reckless

Officers were attending to a complaint of reckless and negligent driving on Valhalla Drive in Bishop Lavis. He cut across a painted island, disobeyed a solid channelising line, and caused vehicles travelling in the right lane of oncoming traffic to swerve to avoid a collision.

He then drove more than 200 metres on the wrong side of the wet road.

The driver’s excuse was that he was late as a result of the bad weather.

How much did it cost to prosecute this driver?

He drove in this manner because there is little to no recourse and his taxi boss's greed furthermore fuels the behavior. Yet the Taxi boss is not on trial here for long reasons I am not going to get into.

Bad excuse, the driver is the culprit. His driving is reckless and dangerous to other road users, so he has to do the fine and/or the time. Useless lot.

As he is effectively an employee of the taxi boss, the taxi boss is (should be) ultimately accountable.

Is that it! (^#%(%&#)^*#_^)(#+%)+_)%@%@^&#

I always wished that vehicles that transport people for reward should be subject to more stringent rules and regulation and testing.

Was also WTF !

To clarify, are you saying the driver is not at fault and the taxi boss is?
No. The driver is at fault, the boss is accountable. The employee is now fined and facing a jail term, off course assuming he is in the employ of the taxi boss. If it is indeed his own taxi then, meaning his is the taxi boss, off course the verdict is sound.

Example: If the driver, driving the bakkie, of JC's Pblumbing Services crashes into your Aston Martin you, or your insurance, will hold Johan Cornelius Schoonhoven (Owner of JC's Plumbing) accountable for damages, correct? If the driver is also unlicensed, it is JC's Plumbing who will be liable.

R1k for being unlicensed is BS

My other half didn't come to a complete stop at a stop street on a quiet suburban road - a cop stepped out from a bush and handed her a fine of R1500.00.

Driving without a licence should have a fine of R10,000.00 by comparison.

Do us all a favour and make him drive his taxi into the crater of Mt.Etna. It's so hot right now.

200 days in jail would have been struggling better deal for motorists?

So was everyone else. Not good enough.
