However, it is not all bad. Roodt explained that the fuel level is a “less bad” tax than other taxes.

What the hell is he on about? Fuel is an input cost to almost every business either directly or indirectly.

Fsck off Dawie, its not a "less bad" tax.. its a fscking atrocious tax as it impacts EVERYTHING in the country ffs, and you call yourself an economist?
I think he considers it "less bad" in that the burden is born more or less equally by all people. ie, it's not targeting him or his demographic.

Yeah I do largely get that, but for me the issue is this "selling" of a narrative that we must expect tax increases but its ok since these are not so bad... when in reality we should be telling Enoch to go and fsck himself unpleasantly.

Expert Dawie drumming up the views with some controversy...

The reality is, SA is broke. You better expect increases, until the ANC finally decides to stop buying votes with grants .....

Yeah I know, SA is bankrupt.. and the ANC does think increases will help, but SA will be the textbook case study for the Laffer curve for generations to come.

If you can have the best taxes, taxes that are low, easy to pay and paid by everyone are the least economically damaging.

Compared to income tax, business tax, dividends tax, or capital gains tax, it is benign because it only would incentivise people to get more efficient cars/drive less. Other taxes decrease activity in places where the state would actually want activity.

Capital gains tax which is a tax on inflation and people having the audacity to save for the future.
Progressive income tax, which punishes people for earning more.
Business tax, which punishes businesses for creating value for other people.
Or dividends tax which punishes people from investing in profitable businesses.
