BIG patch tuesday - Patch your MS stuff!

Just love it when my machine is patched and restarted overnight killing my downloads in the process.

You do know that all this is configurable? Seriously. Windows even allows you to choose your own fave pic as a desktop background! And more. Explore some time. It helps reduce PEBCAC problems like this.

Something restarted my machine last night, this morning when I logged in all applications were closed. And yes I do know that you can configure this however I do believe Microsoft should make it easier.

Easier? How? Sending a tech to your house to do it for you?
 
IMHO it's good that MS are forcing the patches and doing unattended reboots.
Yeah, sucks for some, but the VAST MAJORITY of windows installs out there are not managed/maintained at ALL. Clueless non-tech end users... Resulting in massive botnets etc.

Oh no you didn't just mention botnets in relation to Windows did you?

Just to preempt the post coming soon.. Windows is the biggest botnet and MS makes most of its money from mining bitcoin on your machine.

What version of Win 10? Pro or Home?
You can prevent auto updates, and change how reboots are managed and prevent things from being closed down to restart a PC after a download until you want the restart to happen. It is all about setting the PC up to work the way you want it to work.
And no it should not be made too easy. You have already said you are prepared to do your own thing, so what is the problem of spending a few more minutes sorting out how updates are done and when.

PS This weeks updates are especially critical as Sinbad has pointed out. [-]in another thread[/-]

Delay automatic reboot

When Configure Automatic Updates is enabled in Group Policy, you can enable one of the following additional policies to delay an automatic reboot after update installation:

Turn off auto-restart for updates during active hours prevents automatic restart during active hours.
No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations prevents automatic restart when a user is signed in. If a user schedules the restart in the update notification, the device will restart at the time the user specifies even if a user is signed in at the time. This policy only applies when Configure Automatic Updates is set to option 4-Auto download and schedule the install.

You can also use Registry, to prevent automatic restarts when a user is signed in. Under HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU, set AuOptions to 4 and enable NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers. As with Group Policy, if a user schedules the restart in the update notification, it will override this setting.
