South African rugby fortress gets big tech upgrades

The Springbok match against Scotland at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, 11 July 2026, will be the first under the stadium's new multi-million rand lighting system.

The Blue Bulls Company, which owns the stadium, enlisted Afrison to carry out the project, which involved replacing all 272 of "The Fortress's" legacy floodlights with energy-efficient LEDs.

Loftus didn't have great lights so I am happy.

Maybe that's why the tickets are so expensive ?

Changing a light fixture hardly qualifies as a "tech upgrade"
Anyway... all of 'em are Chinesium.

Here's to seeing people complain in the future when the capacitors fail and the lights start flashing randomly.

It added that, with traditional stadium bulbs facing global discontinuation and strict regulations on importing fully assembled LED systems, Afrison manufactured the lighting system in South Africa.

“The new fixtures boast 70% local component composition, importing only the specialised silicon microchips and drivers where no local supplier exists,” it said.
Also:
The technical upgrades are significant, given that the old stadium lights struggled to deliver sufficient lighting at 1,300 lux. They also took around 30 minutes to warm up.

“Afrison’s new system guarantees a uniform, shadow-free 2,000 lux across every blade of grass, instantly activating at the touch of a button from a central control room,” the Blue Bulls Company said.

Loftus needs to be demolished or turned into an indoor arena as it's so ancient. Build a massive new 80 000 seat facility with Gautrain access north of Pretoria instead. A stadium's life span is generally 50 years and Loftus is well past that.

Do you have any idea how old those flood lights were and how much they cost to run? Maybe you would like to pay their electric bill? You seem to forget that a number of Sundowns games had to be cancelled as the lights literally went out. This is a welcome change.
