What is the biggest AMD DDR1 dual core processor that is currently available and who stocks it?

My one supplier has some socket 939 athlon64 x2 dual core 4600+ (2400MHz)'s. Problem is it costs R2600.

For about R2600 you can get the socket AM2 4600+, a decent motherboard and 1GB RAM...

Look for SKT 939 Opteron processors. They're the best by far and overclock quite nicely.

I have a 4400+x2 atm and wanted to see if i can get a cheapish upgrade on performance as my cpu is the weak link in the chain. Does the opterons outperform the normal dual core cpu's?

I'm sure they would. They basically server processors but not in the Intel mindset.

Check out Toms Hardware for comparrisons.

Yes, but not by much at all for things you will use it for.
Not worth it, the 4400+ isn't a bad processor at all.

PearlJam the Opterons do not outperform the regular Athlons. Especially if you have the 1Mb cache/core version. That is 4000+/4400+/4800+/FX60. Those will behave and perform exactly like the opteron parts or equivalent speeds. Best bet if you want to overclock might be an Opteron over the regular version, but you could probably overclock a regular version to the same level as well depending on the stepping etc...
