I'm going to buy a bike to try and avoid all these new road rippoffs..
So although I have ridden motorbikes in the past, and a scooter for approximately 18 months,I never actually got my license. And since I will need to finance this one I need to get my learners at least.

The last time I went for anything like this was in 1996 so I can't quite remember how it works.

How does one go about this now days?

Go book yourself a test at your local testing station. Your learners is now valid for 2yrs. (Did mine twice in the past, kept on redoing my learners after it expired each time when I still use to ride my bike).

Give Sa Learners a try.

You can do your booking online( they source a booking or you) you just go pay the confirmation... then go write the exam.
Yes it costs slightly more... but no frustration on the hunt to find a booking.

You can also use their supplied learning material... I used that and passed it first time.( also for bike licence)

Ok cool, I gave them a go.

Also considering getting a bike license.
I'm still confused about two things...I have my driver's license already for a number of years. Do I need to re-do my learners? And do I need to get a separate bike license?

Thought that a licence for a particular code/category allows one to drive vehicles for lower categories as well...same as how people go for a truck licence because its supposed to be easier to pass, and then be able to drive cars afterwards.

momo786 - yesm you need to do your learners as its bike specific.

Motorbikes are there own category and for a reason. I hope government never does away with this as most bike accidents are caused by unlicensed drivers (in the motorcycle sense). Even insurance companies are educating bike owners on the importance of bike safety and learning how to ride. Way different to a car doing a 100km in winter on your bike. Your judgement changes and so does your ability to survive an accident.

I'm actually going to do a training course. I have heard about a place called Roto Rookies out benoni side. Apparently they're quite good.
