Bike maintenance questions

Hey guys,

So having had my new bike (Megelli 250r) for a few days now, there are a few things I have noticed which I would like to get handled.

1. Body work - fairings need fixing/replacing. There are a few of them with cracks etc and I want to get this sorted before they break further. I have contacted Biker's Warehouse for prices so we shall see.

More important things:
2. Neutral sensor doesn't sense, as in it does not detect the bike is in neutral. Would this likely be a sensor in the gearbox? Or on the sidestand? I assume it must be the gearbox one as the bike doesn't cut out if I put the stand up in "neutral" or any other gear.

3. Fuel indicator light is always on. it is sometimes off when I start the bike but then comes on. Fuel sensor busted?

4. Left rear indicator doesn't work. The bike had LED indicators so I would assume the LEDs aren't busted. Likely just a wiring issue, yes?

5. Bike sometimes "idles" at 4,000 RPM, normally after riding and then slowing down. Pushing the accelerator all the way forward makes no difference. Idle setting too high? It usually idles just over 1,000RPM so this is very high and noisy.

6. Bike starts redlining at 10,000RPM but often reaches a flat point at 8,000RPM if the throttle is fully open. If I ease off a little on the throttle it will pull through and then up to as high as I want to take it. Likely a carburrator issue, no?

7. Bike has no ABS. Is this a firmware update needed? Can I flash the BIOS?

Any help or suggestions regarding the above would be appreciated :)

This coming weekend will be all about cleaning, fine-tuning and tightening up of the bike :D

Could very well just be the bulb that has popped.

Throttle cable needs lube.

Sounds like dirty carb or dodgy fuel.

Dude this sounds like a serious lemon you bought. Why on earth would you purchase this knowing all these issues?
 
Sorry I should clarify, it is a second hand bike. 6000km on the clock, likely no warranty.

So, on that note, I'm looking at tips on correcting the above.

Point 7 was a joke, clearly didn't come across that way.

Fuel should be fine, but there does seem to be an issue with the carb from the googling I have done. Will open it up this weekend and clean it up. Possibly could go with a custom carb too but that's money I don't plan on spending.

As for your last point, I was not aware of all of these issues when I bought it. Owner didn't exactly disclose everything (20 year old kid). But I did buy it voetstoets knowing there was body work to be fixed.

Sounds like a serious case of goedkoop koop is duur koop.

Obviously accident damaged or just highly unreliable in the first place.

What did you pay for it? I'm willing to bet fixing the fairings alone will cost more than the bike did.

I can get you a contact that does fairing repairs. Plastic welding and painting.
As for the neutral sensor... jirre, no idea :D

Thanks bru. Just going to get a quote beforehand so I a) have a comparitive and b) know I have the correct parts :D
 
Fuel Indicator : Try and clean the fuel sensor with some clean fuel, should not be too hard to get out. Just pop the tank off and you should see it at the bottom of the tank usually fitted with some screws and a rubber washer.

Carb : The idling and the inconsistent revs could be dirty jets. While you already have the tank off just remove the carb and please cover the pipe with a clean cloth, you dont want something falling in there. Once the carb is off (take note of where the overflow and feed pipes go), get like an old bowl with some more clean fuel and carefully take the bowl apart (this will be the underside of the carb). Unscrew the 2 jets in the carb with a small flat screwdriver. You will see there is a notch in the jets where the screwdriver will fit into. Rinse the jets in the fuel and check if you can clearly see through the holes. Lightly blow through the holes just to make sure. Put it back together, pop the tank on and start it. You will struggle to start it as the bowl of the carb will be empty.

Does the bike have a small fuel pump or it is gravity feed?

Out of warranty. I hope you got that scoot for under R30k - else this may be school fees. Find a decent mechanic near you and have the issues addressed.

1. Body work - Cosmetic. Leave till last.
2. Neutral sensor - Not familiar with the marque. Suspect it would be in the gearbox. $$$ if it is. Many people disconnect the side stand kill switch (me included). Might just need a re connection.
3. Fuel indicator light - Might just be a faulty sender unit.
4. Left rear indicator - Loose earth wire. Suspect somebody has had that bike apart and didn't put it back together 100%
5. Bike sometimes - Cable routed incorrectly?
6. Bike redlining - Can be carb. Can be plugs. Can be fuel restricted. Can be air restricted. Hard to diagnose this one.
7. Bike has no ABS - No fix here.
