Bike making weird noise

My bike started making a weird noise this morning. It happens when I rev it up; the engine makes a rattling noise that goes high pitched at high revs (7000+) and sounds a bit like turbo - if I can explain it that way.

When I lower the revs, or idle the bike, the high pitched noise slows down (obviously because it moves less), loses its high-pitchedness, and sounds like a rattling noise again.

It's not coming from the engine as far as I can tell.

Should I be worried?

WTF? You said it only happened when you rev the engine! Besides, it’s the only moving part.

“Should I be worried?”

Always be worried about weird noises. Cam chain?

Check if anything is loose - exhaust, etc.

Might be something that's getting a bit loose and is now rattling.

I did a full check and everything seems intact. It could just be something really small that is caused to vibrate when the engine cycles, which would explain why its frequency increases when the revs do.

Something like that, yes.

Just keep an ear on it, and if it gets worse, take it to a mechanic for inspection.

Get a longish screwdriver and press the screwdriver part against suspect areas on the engine. Press the handle part against your ear. It operates as a stethoscope. If the “weird noises” are not caused by something chewing itself up in the engine, it’s probably external and you can relax a bit. Try to ID the source of the noise, however.

Have you checked your oil level?

Thanks, quite helpful for an alien :D

The oil is good.

I did test the noise and it's definitely external to the engine.

“Thanks, quite helpful for an alien ”

Us aliens nurse star ships through the galaxy. A motorcycle is no big deal compared to a stuttering hyperspace drive.

Have you worked on the bike (and maybe left something loose)?

What kind of noise is it? A jingle? A scrape? Is it muffled? Is there a repetitive pattern? Eg. Scrape, jingle, thunk (repeat).

If you are uneasy, best to get someone knowledgeable to listen. It could be one of those “expensive” noises.

Palimino, a suggestion: Please use the QUOTE button, otherwise it looks like you are playing that childish game where you repeat everything the other person is saying
