I'd reeeeeeeeally like to know who of you have a bike or scooter and how many times you've gotten knocked?

A friend of mine has had his scooter for just over a year now and has already been knocked twice... his freaking 6 foot 4 or 5", really hard to miss and when he got knocked the drivers said "I didn't see you".

It just seems you're asking to die if you're riding around on a motorbike... I dunno

I guess having a bike must be really fun:confused:

My fiancee has been riding scooters for 6 years now and has never been knocked down.

You sure he is riding it properly? Taking the neccessary precautions, watching out for cars, having his lights on,etc ?

the most nb part is to be on the look out and anticipate what the next guy is gonna do even before he knows he is gonna do it
that said, accidents do and can happen even to the most cautious riders
been riding a bout 2 years without incident

agree with nic777

I road my bike for 2yrs on a really busy road every day and never had a single problem. I also had a buddy that wiped out 4 times in 12 mths on his bike (he is twice my size) but he was a moving violation - last crash resulted in him being airlifted

Also going to agree with rodga as your never 100% immune regardless of how good you are.

Its all about defensive driving, patience and not being a Darwin candidate on the road.

Well said! :D

Every morning I hear on the radio the words "A biker has been knocked over". That statement alone suggests the biker was innocent. Perhaps the biker rode into the car ,rather than the other way around?

I had a ridiculous argument with a cyclist on the weekend. She was riding down the middle of the road and I had absolutely no idea what she was doing until the women decided to, out of no where, turn right. I decided to ask after pullng into the same parking lot she was in why she had not indicated with a hand signal her intention to right turn, her reply, "You should have known what I was going to do".............yes *sarcastic* I should have known what you were going to do, but I was flattered by the confidence she has in my mind reading ability. Sadly for her the next driver wont be quite so patient to wait and see what her next move is. What was even more alarming is she did not care nor admit that she could have used a hand signal. Madness.

I've seen a motorbike accident happen in front of my eyes (Honda CBR 1000RR doing cartwheels down the N1 near Atterbury offramp) and also seen a few close calls.
All of them without exception were as a result of the motor cyclist weaving between cars at a speed much greater than the surrounding traffic instead if sitting patently in the lanes like normal vehicles.

If you're going to ride like an ass don't come crying when I change lanes in front of you.
I do my best but I don't have unrestricted view to the rear that allows me to see you coming at 120km/h while I'm doing 40km/h.

That being said - if it wasn't for the safety aspect I would have bought a small motorcycle long ago. It would have saved me about R5K per month.

Yeah I really want a bike but sometimes I do something stupid driving a car and think if I did something similar on a bike I'd be injured or worse

any close calls?

last crash resulted in him being airlifted

does he still ride?

I commute 60km (30km each way) between Durbanville and Rondebosch every day and as long as you keep your eyes open and don't do anything stupid, it's a perfectly safe way to commute. I had an accident last year February in peak traffic when someone turned into my lane (fast lane) while I was next to them but it was pretty minor and it could have easily been prevented if I'd been more careful. After that, I'm more careful and haven't had any issues since.

I find that being courteous and calm while riding helps a whole lot.

sounds like a much more dangerous way to learn a lesson then if you were say... driving a car

but do you enjoy riding your scooter (or bike)?

Hehe. A 1800cc and 750cc "scooter"... But yeah, I absolutely love it. I get to work much quicker than I would with a car and when I get here I'm relaxed and ready for the day. :)
