I have seriously given up. I have been on GSM for over 3 hours now. I can not send or receive sms or make or receive calls What on earth is going on?

Did you check if you are connected to BIS?

Try turning off all connections and then put them on again (or do a reset).

Alternatively re-register the host routing table thingie.
