Bishops Court Broadband??

So I have a client who lives in BishopsCourt in cape town, his ADSL line is useless( gets max 384k when its working) and he rarely gets 1 bar of vodacom 3G signal even 2G is a bit dodge.

My question is does anyone know of any WISPs in the area or have good MTN/CELLc/8ta 3G signal in that area(close to Kirstenbosch top gate)? He's badly in need of an alternative as he works from home. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Try external antenna for Vodacom/Cell C. I doubt if there are any wisps as that area full of trees etc, but WiMax might work - speak with telkom about swapping adsl for wimax maybe.

Agreed Wimax would be the best option to use or a strong antenna for the vodacom but that is just not cost effective. What is the line mainly used for?

Mainly just for emails and internet but his line attenuation is close to 60 and at 384kb he has a SNR of between 9 and 12 depending on the day... The line drops quite often as well, and at the moment there's a problem at his exchange so 0 connectivity over the last week(at home)

We've tried an external (borrowed) antenna for vodacom, but had little luck with it, got up to 2 bars but speeds still weren't great compareable to 384k really. I'll try find out about WiMax but I thought there was only coverage in JHB? Is there a coverage map around?

What about NeoFail WiMax? Edit:- ignore this it starts at R1299/pm

Installation cost is not a factor... Although there's a reason they live in Bishopscourt.... They don't throw money away for no good reason. Like he wouldn't pay R1299/pm for 1Mbps WiMax from neotel but if the +-R1000 external antenna worked then a R6000 signal booster for his house would not be a problem.
But since the vodacom signal is still crappy with the antenna that's not an option.

Look, there should be a difference between "throw money away" and "investing money in internet connectivity" - its 2 different things, and if your client fails to understand this - well, let him work from nicely located office then.

I think you misunderstand. An initial upfront "Investment" of even R6000 would be fine. But paying an extra R900+ a month for a service, that he only uses for email and basic browsing, might not be seen as "investing money in internet connectivity"
