Bitcoin Mining - who does it?

Unfortunately you're too late.

Using a graphics card isn't an option anymore as people are using dedicated ASIC miners which leave the graphics card miners in the dirt.
Seriously, you're not going to be able to cover your costs.

Has anyone actually tried mining with a top of the range asic machine? If you crunch the numbers it seems viable. Okay, you are not going to get rich, but you can make a bit of pocket money, and if you only use it in winter, then have a nice warm house at the same time.
I haven't yet read of someone who has actually bought an asic miner and said that it is not viable.

The difficulty is too hard now to mine without extreme bulk.

Bitcoin might be dying soon, as Central Banks try to create "controllable" alternatives. So probably not worth spending loads of money on equipment. It will be like a pyramid scheme where early adopters make the most, and the last guys are caught with their pants down.
