BitDefender this evening released an auto update to windows 7, 64 bit users which picked up all files on the pc as a Virus - Trojan.FakeAlert.5.

Causing all accessed files to be quarantined or deleted depending on users settings.

Most people rebooted and in doing so killed their windows installation completely and have to start from scratch

Wrecked 3 of my PC's at home. We went out shopping and came home to a virus infection on every machine according to BitDefender.

The forum thread with all the rage is here

http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?showtopic=18759&st=240

Obviously they didn't even bother to test the patch properly before releasing it. Poor showing from a company like this. There going to be a whole load of shouting going on about this one

You should have switched to Microsoft Security Essentials long ago.

Well played bitdefender. I'm sure you killed a bunch of viruses in the process.

Stupid !@#$#@

Completely destroyed files across all my drives (including my back ups)

To add insult to injury, after re-installing windows I wanted to install BD from my brand new (bought yesterday) disk only to discover that the cabinet files in the installer are corrupted

What a joke

Update: BitDefender

Hi Guys, I am Raluca, from BitDefender.
Just wanted to let you know that, as a BitDefender representative, I apologize for the issues that you are experiencing on behalf of the BitDefender update released today for Windows 64-bit systems. The faulty update has been removed and we are working on a fix for the issues experienced by the users that downloaded this update. Here is some background information on this problem:

Today (morning PST) we had an update for 64-bit systems (available on our servers between 8 AM and 11 30 AM PST) that caused multiple Windows and BitDefender files to be quarantined. We are creating a patch that will restore all quarantined files. The patch will be available shortly. We apologize for this error and we will work to prevent this from occurring again in the future.

Also, please only use the patch that will soon be released from bitdefender.com, all other removal tools are exploits created by malware writers. All updates regarding a patch and/or removal tools will be posted here on http://www.bitdefender.com/world/KnowledgeBase/consumer/#638

Thank you for your understanding, I will keep you updated.

Not nice to have it happen to your production system.

Isn't it possible to include a list of all known Windows system files, so that the AV will flag them as infected, but won't quarantine or touch tem in any way should these become infected without user intervention?

I believe I wasted money on Bitdefender, I had to do a fresh install and I lost some stuff in the process. Installed MSE, going to stay away from BD in future.
