So I've made up my mind that I'm gonna upgrade my TV come Black Friday if I can find a good enough deal and while I'm at it get a smallish one for my boy, in one go, so he can finally let me have my lounge back.

Initial thoughts were to just drop my father's TV lisence number like I did last time (mind you this was 2011)...
I don't have my own TV lisence and quite frankly I don't plan on getting one ever.

After today tho, I'm somewhat wondering if I should reconcider. Went into Dion Wired out of curiosity ask spoke to the salesman some. Apparently things have changed to such an extent that the person who's number it is needs to be present when buying a TV and even online purchases will be rejected if the lisence number and profile information of the buyer don't match.

Can anyone confirm this? Am I really going to have to concider one of these totally ripoff lisences?

Thanks for taking the time to read this

Wonder if you can walk in with a toolbox and remove the TV tuner in the store. You technically wouldn't need a licence then would you?

Meh, I've read a few posts recently where it doesn't seem to matter anymore whether it can actually pick up a signal or not, they are just trying to enforce this idiocracy on any device with a screen bigger than a tablet. Really dreading having to go that route if it turns out to be true. Hoping someone here might have been thru a purchase recently without one that can shed some light

We recently got a TV from takealot and used my MILs license as she has kept it current. On delivery the guys didn't even bother to ask they just dropped it off.

Last year Makro in our area had a pre-approval process running. You could not even try and buy a TV without a slip of paper saying your licence details had been checked ....

And during placing the order online it didn't at any point ask for the lisence no? Or wanted to verify it to ur acc details? If not I'm relieved, thank you.. Had an idea this oke was taking me for a ride, but it was just so shocking that he even had a reply for my question

Before it allows you to pay it asks for the TV Lic / ID number - so we just gave my MIL's details (on my takealot profile). It did the verification and came back allowing us to proceed to payment. So it DOES check prior to payment for a valid license but no check / cross verification on delivery

This gives me hope! Do you perhaps know what the verification entailed? Concerned that it's going to do a comparison between the buyer profile and the lisence profile, but from what u describing it's mainly checking if the lisence no is valid and paid up to date. You didn't have to email a copy of the ID or anything did you? I see Dion Wired asks for that on their checkout profile, going to do a dummy buy on Makro soon and verify what they want, but I think I'm mainly going to use takealot if the prices are right. Thank you for the feedback

Ag just buy it through Esquire. They don't give a toss about a license.

Is that right... Will they be doing Black Friday tho hmm.. For what I've got in mind I'm working within a limited budget
Phone Mohammed. Very nice guy to speak to.
Many can attest to the great experience.

Just to check if it is valid and paid up
