Hopefully this may be of help to someone else & save hours of frustration & irritation.
As per my previous post, I've been experiencing battery problems on my IPhone 4 (Black).
While trying to solve the battery problem, I managed to borrow a brand new IPhone 4 (White) which was still sealed in the box. Put on my 'old' phone's cover & since I had received two screen guards, the extra one went on too.
Connected it to my computer, restored my data & all was good, until mid-morning the next day when while typing on WhatsApp, the screen started doing weird things like in the movies when someone hacks something - was fading in & out, , moving up & down by itself, finally went all white & then completely blank.
I could still receive calls, but I couldn't answer them, because the screen didn't work.
I tried resetting the phone by holding the [Home] button at the bottom of the screen & the top [Sleep/Wake] button simultaneously for an extended period of time to reset the phone. No luck.
I knew that it was fully charged, but thought that connecting it to power might help bring it back to life. About an hour later it came on & I could use it as if nothing had happened.
The phone worked for a couple of hours & then the weirdness happened all over again.
Eventually, after much Google'ing I found an obscure post about how the black & white IPhone differs & that a screen guard designed for a black phone makes a white phone go mental due to the white phone's proximity sensor.
I removed the screen guard & the phone worked perfectly. So, moral of the story, don't put a screen guard designed for a black IPhone on white one.
