Blackberry 10 arrival in SA

Hi everyone at MyBroadband.

I see that the new range of BlackBerry 10 devices will be announced in New York on the 30th of January.

When do you guys think it will become available through mobile carriers in South Africa?

I heard that stock will be arriving at the end of Jan
 
Now that will be a surprise. My understanding is that stock will come in towards the end of Q1. BB10 OS is far from finished as well and hardly any apps ready for the appstore.

I think you have been reading last year's news :-) I believe OS10 will be great and finished. They have worked very hard to attract developers and get the apps ready.

They're talking about 70000 apps, but I think there will be even more. The last Port-a-thon a few days ago generated something like 15000 apps in 36 hours.

Yeah they gave away phones for free to developers. Then again its much the same as Android hand out Nexus Devices or Microsoft handing out phones at Build conferences.

Funny enough the only company that does not follow this path is the one with the most apps. Says something doesn't it.
 
I gotta say I was gonna take a gamble on the new device ( given their track record ) but now that BIS is not usable on BB10+, I somehow doubt I will be trying it out... that was essentially my decision maker.

Since when? AFAIK, the details have not been announced, but they have said BIS will still be around.
 
Nope meant BIS as in the Internet Service. My sister confirmed it after they had a pre-launch meeting with RIM. The service will still run but only for current ( non-BB10) blackberry's.

BES will also not be supported.

No. As I understand it, RIM will not take part of the revenue that the carriers charge us (so carriers make less money if they sell a Blackberry data plan). Check out this explanation after the quarter 3 earnings call.

In any case, everything is just speculation until 30 January 2013 :-)

Ok well I dont work for any of the cellular providers, I'm merely passing on the message that has been given to me by my sibling ( as I was very interested in the BB10 ) and she works for vodacom in their products department.

That video is dated 24/12/2012. Her meeting with RIM was last week so would assume this is the latest news appropriate to SA.

Basically the once off fee you pay for BIS is going to fall away. The BB10 data usage will be the same as any other smartphone where you will need a data plan loaded with MB in order to use data critical services such as BBM etc.

Additionally I have looked at some unconfirmed contracts related to the new device and none have an option for a BIS service... Some come with included data ( which would be pointless if BIS was indeed being continued ).

We can of course wait to see how it pans out.

If that is true, how they going to promote BB10 in countries like SA, also what is going to happen to existing contracts.

Even worse for RIM, if they remove BIS countries like SA is going to have a mass exodus in RIM support, no need to sit with a crap device and ****ty apps when you can get a WP, Android, iOS with the same data bundles and loads better support.

I would think they are hoping that the device is going to speak for itself. Someone will get it and if it is indeed amazing as RIM shows it to be, then word of mouth is enough promotion for them.

Models prior to BB10, will still have BIS service... and any packages related to the older models will also have BIS option. I can only assume RIM wants to move away from BIS and focus more on apps.

This is exactly why I'm hesitant on getting it now. I'd rather go with a phone that is known not to cause the issues I get with my current bb. I had a HTC Desire before moving to BB and it is by far the best phone I've had.
