Hi

I am thinking of getting the blackberry 8520, but have heard from some people that it has been taken off the market due to problems.

One of my friends also says that hers also freezes a lot.

Any of you know if it has really been taken off the market? Or what the problems are? And what do you all think of the phone.

Thanks

I know at least 5 people with this phone, none of them have had any issues. It is definitely not being taken off the market, I know some one who is getting one right now.

Its the Storm 2 that has been temporarily removed from the market due to an OS glitch, which apparently has been rectified and the phone will soon be "re-launched". No problems at all with the 8520

Only problems are with the crap "internet" speeds.

Get a normal smart phone, then get a 3G bundle. Blackberry and it's internet is a scam the bandwidth starved SA public is only too happy to believe... IMHO.

No problems here either. did you hear about people that are paid to give bad reviews to scare people off a product. Pity about that coz i use reviews alot when making a decision on buying a product.

Awesome phone, does what it says and it does it well. You wont go wrong with it. Yet if you want gps and or camera flash rather go for the more expensive models, but if you want a good smartphone you wont go wrong.

The 8520 comes in
Black berry
White berry
and a new Red berry
Best Smartphone on the market - I use the higher models 9000 and 9700

Priced at 169 pm from vodacom all inclusive or around R 2500 cash though
You will need to add on th BIS service for unlimited on device browsing
If bought cash @ R59 pm

Yeah, sure.

I see speed tests have shown Edge/GPRS to be faster than 3G on small pages; in other words, it's more than adequate for casual surfing. 3G is great for app downloads though.

I'm not talking from experience, only from what I have heard here.

I do not have a BB, due to me following my own advice above... As always, with anything, YMMV.

EDGE is plenty fast enough. I normally keep the 3G switched off on my bberry. My theory is that if it saves battery life on the iPhone it will do the same on the BBerry. I'm not sure how accurate that is though.

It does save battery power. I kept 3G on my 9000 turned off for a couple of months, and it did stretch the battery a bit, while making virtually no difference to my day-to-day browsing/email. I had one issue though: GPRS/EDGE interferes with radios, while 3G doesn't, and since my phone mount is right next to the radio in my car, it was constantly making noise.
