So the wife upgraded to Z10 and gave me her old Bold 9780. Phone is now setup for all 'n all with an old MTN350 contract sim (2 months left).

Whatsapp is working nicely (and only ) on the wi-fi connection at home. What must I do to make it work elsewhere?

To many of you this might sound like a real n00b Q, but for me it sounds like a real intelligent Q :p

If you have an active data connection (BIS) it should work. Do any of the other internet functions work?

How will I know if I have this?

Well I've just gone onto the mybb website through the browser (deactivated the wi-fi connection because I'm at home now)

i have a 9780. if bis is not activated, browsing will still work but whatsapp wont. you need to phone mtn and ask if there is a bis servicec activated on your number and if there isn't, you need to activate it in order to use whatsapp

Thank you. I've even reinstalled the app again in a last hopeful attempt :D

Is this BIS activation an additional cost?

So I'm not going to use BBM, most of my mates have S3's etc, but I need BIS in order to use Whtapp

Whatsapp cost: R59 (BIS) + R8 (sub fee) = R67 on BB

I just tested, on my 9360 I can access whatsapp via wifi.
Go to Manage connections - and turn off the mobile network then test the whatsapp.

Does your contract have data?

nope just voice, but it works on my wi-fi connection at home. Phoned mtn and they said I MUST get bis, no other way.

If you want, you can try changing your APN to internet and check,
go to option, device, advanced, TCP/IP, enable APN and type the APN name as "internet" without "
If this doesn't work, MTN is k@k

Thx for advice. Will try it.
BTW, I've got 2 months left on contract. Waiting it out to port somewhere else. Contemplating CellC

Keegan I did exactly what you've said and it worked.
The "APN settings enabled" checkbox wasn't ticked. So I've enabled it.
APN name was empty so I left it like that.

Will this scenario have a negative impact? Cost wise or other?

Perfect,
Yes, you should be billed for the data used... CellC FTW! I have CellC now for years and have no problems their BIS is awesome.
