I was amazed when I learned that my SE P990i was compatible with BIS! All I had to do was subscribe for R59... What other handsets have this feature? And any disadvantages?

Most Nokia Eseries devices are BlackBerry Connect compatible (not sure whether BlackBerry Connect = BIS). Well, I know that the E51 is, just didn't know it when I upgraded last year

Yes - found the relevant information just now :o. According to the Nokia BlackBerry Connect 3.0 Manual
You can have the following BlackBerry services active on your Nokia device at the same time:
• BlackBerry Enterprise Server
• BlackBerry Internet Service

The problem is that you do not get unlimited browsing/data with BIS on non Blackberry phones. Only unlimited emails. Attachment size is limited to 2.9MB

Vodacom's take on BB connect on non-bb

Went back to my functon heavy underpowered p990 after my wife took my 6110 Nav cos she trashed her phone.

She's now due for an upgrade and so I embarked on the same path as you did thinking that a nokia (maybe 5800) with free on device browsing is not a bad idea for her. I phoned Vodacom customer care and was told that email and internet would be free on a bb connect compatible device. Just as a backup I sent them the following email see their reply:

My Email:
I'd like to know if the blackberry offer of R59 for unlimited email AND INTERNET on the device will apply if she uses a blackberry connect compatible phone. We would also like to know which handsets apart from the ones mentioned on your website support Blackberry connect as I'm sure there are more devices than mentioned there.

Reply:
Kindly be advised that the Blackberry connect devices listed on the Vodacom website are the only devices that supports the Blackberry connect service. The Blackberry connect service is made available on the handset by the handset manufacturer.

Please bear in mind that when using the Blackberry service of R59.00 per month on a Blackberry connect device, the email service would free but you would be billed for any internet usage.

The reply you have received is 100% correct.

That is really lame, no surfing? So why charge the R59 anyway? Why not charge maybe R29 just for emails? Aah crap, here goes my plan for using BIS when I get my N97 ... looks like it's back to the BB Storm for now...
