Blackberry and the crap camera's

When is blackberry going to ever release a phone with a camera to compete with some of the other smartphones out there? At the moment the two newest phones (9700 and storm 2) both only have 3.5mp camera's.

Most of the nokia, samsung and htc phones come with better then this.

Now okay for the 9700, i can see the camera as not being as important, but with a less business focused device like the storm 2, surely they could have done better.

I would move to blackberry, but given my now already 2 year old smart phone has a better camera, i cant for the life of me see why i would step down.

Anybody know if anything is in the pipeline with at least a 5mp camera?

The camera is right at the bottom of my list when it comes to buying a phone.

Megapixels is also a bit of a bogus number, particularly when most people only display their images digitally.

If you want a camera get a camera....

I have the 8900 curve that has a 3.2mp camera with auto focus and flash... it actually takes really good pics. Upping the MP on a cellphone camera does nothing, just makes the image bigger. You only really get a good picture when you get a bigger lens and that is impossible on a cellphone

i have compared pics from a blackberry against my current phone (N95 8Gb) and they dont compare.

I know i should get a camera if a need a camera, but my cellphone camera has really come in handy a number of times. At present i have about 1200 pictures on my phone. So for me, a good camera ranks pretty high up.

I would like to move to the blackberry for a number of reasons, but the camera factor is holding me back.

I think its unlikely to change any time soon.

With the money you save with the bb data plan you can get yourself a nice slim ixus and take even better photos.

WRT the megapixel myth have a look at www.thebestcamera.com where iPhone users (all the models have less than 3mp) post some pretty good stuff.

I never have, and still don't, buy this! If you want to surf the net, get a laptop. It is the same argument. I want a swiss army knife like device that I can have in my pocket and allow me to take great photos, record video, surf the net, check the weather, give me directions, play games on, read an ebook, watch a movie on etc etc etc. Why have 7 devices in my pocket when I can get one that does it all?

What is the likelihood of me having a separate camera with me when we stumbled upon this little fellow in the park recently? The N82 in my pocket did a perfect job in capturing the tiny guy (well perfect enough for me!).

Remember "the best camera is the one you have with you"...
That being said every cellphone camera I've ever seen has been cr*p... I usually only use mine for showing what something looked like kinda thing and sometimes even then it's not so great.

I expected on a device like the storm 2 for them to make some improvements in the camera department. The other phones are more business driven and so a camera is not so important.

I think if blackberry make a improvement in the camera department, they might see another group of users moving in their direction, myself being one of them.

I wouldn't hold out for it. Neither apple nor palm have moved in this direction either, I doubt RIM ever will they can't compete with Samsung, Nokia, SE in this way and they're not going to waste the effort. For them it's presence is more of a convenience thing. Personally I took a total of 4 shots with my phone last year. It's also at the bottom of my list.

If you want a phone with a smart camera - go for the high-end Nokia's or SE's. If you want a brilliant business phone - then get a Blackberry.

Ya but, what about when you drive from Polokwane is late December 2009 and see a beautiful black (yes Beautiful) Porsche Panamera. You take out your BB8520 and take a pic, send it to a few car nut buddies and when you get to your PC later on, you realise that you've embarrassed yourself with such a bad quality pic. Detail is absolutely BAD.
Its the only reason I wanna upgrade, oh, and for 3G also. (BB 9700)

I have a kid and thats the best reason to have a camera. My kodak is not "always on me"

Pity you didnt buy one of those cars with a glove box . . . I'v heard you can even put cameras in them.

Agreed - so why are you so concerned about a cellphone?

i agree; i hate it when people say that :get a camera if u want a camera. we are moving very quickly in this digital age, and devices should move with the times too. Dont be so old fashioned and say it isnt important. I know for a fact that many people pass on BB cause the camera is a bit SHI--y.

Useful stuff depends on who you are and what you consider useful. As i mentioned e better camera, might open doors for blackberry to a different market. A market which see's other things (like a decent camera) useful. At the moment they doing great with business users, but they got room to grow even more.

And it might close a few other doors where the blackberry is strongest. I'm thinking in particular about government, military, and corporate clients, who buy by the boat load, and might prefer that you not have a high resolution camera on your phone.

Why battle in an over saturated market when they can own the niche?* There are plenty of other phones out there - many that support blackberry connect software themselves. I'm sure one of those has a camera?

Blackberry connect software on other phones? Does that mean you can get BIS on other phones? Any idea which phones can do this?

Blackberry Connect is pretty worthless, only works on e-mail, no browsing or anything. Either you get a berry or don't bother. The fact that the camera is so important to you indicates that you would be happier with a Sony Ericsson, Nokia, or Samsung. Blackberry isn't for everyone.
