Blackberry - applications

Hi,

I'm looking into the Blackberry bold... but chatting to my dad who was a BB Pearl and now a BB Curve user... it seems like if you want any applications - you have to fork out $$$ to get them. And this is also for something as "simple" as a PDF viewer. Is this true?

Some applications cost money and others are completely free. PDF viewing comes with it afaik - at least I dont recall ever installing any additional software.
