So my question is HOW DOES BIS for blackberry work?
And why cant other smartphones (eg Android, iphone) not implement the same ---- "
" , Android Internet Service.
Because to be honest Android, for me at least, ... well let me just say that i prefer Android to Blackberry - and think that it would be Stupendisly Awesome:twisted: if Google(or whoever) would come out with this "AIS" as I would call it. Afterall, Android is an "internet phone", - plus i have a Galaxy Tab, and at the moment i can just imagine what it would be like to have "
unlimited
" internet on my Tab.......for R59.

Got a BB Storm at the moment which seems to under perform most of the time, in more ways than 1.

So - Why is it that only Blackberry has an "Internet Service"? - and other Providers cant do the same.

Probably because they not interested, Android is open source so google essentially gives it away and its up to the handset manufacturer to use it as needed.
Also BB used to be almost exclusively a business phone and that's where the server came from, unless im mistaken it was 1 of the first push systems out their, BIS is also controlled by RIM, your ISP is essential a conduit to the BIS server in Europe, they have about as much control over BIS as you have over the ocean tides. Literally all they can do with BIS is throttle the speed, they cannot block or unblock sites, protocols or ports, everything is run from them to RIMs server in Europe and back down.

Until OS6 BIS also had file size limits and in a way it still does, for emails at least. Also before Droid RIM was a big enough player to demand the facility of BIS, but with current abuse and network throttling because of it, it wont be long before BB looses it vast popularity to other, more expensive bus less "crap" options like WInMob7, Droid and iKak simply because of the throttling. Users country wide are reporting in most cases that 3G on BIS is actually slower than EDGE and this is because of the users that are abusing it by download 8GB a day. BIS is the most expensive service any of our providers have every sold and it wont be long before the R59 unlimited becomes R59 limited like they have done in every other country in the world, an unlimited BIS package in US will cost upwards of $35 per month, that's actually more than your phone contract itself, that would translate into paying something like R250 for BIS on a weekender.

At the rate people are abusing BIS i would be surprised if its still unlimited by this time next year, that or the BIS craze dies out due to terrible QOS, Vodacoms wholesale rate for data is about 8c per mb i think, but that's when your buying terabytes. So lets say that's their break even, probably not, but for the sake of argument lets. Your looking @ 8c X 8192mb for just 1 user for 1 day, that's about R700 if my maths correct, now say that 1 users achieves this for 1 full month, that's almost R20 000 for 1 abuser, now you and I both know that's its not just 1 abuser, its probably closer to 1000 and that would probably be a cautious estimated average for their collective daily usage, it would probably be much higher and much more than 1000.

The providers are making such a big loss with BIS that they rather provide you with the ****test BIS possible while they find a way to actually start at the very least breaking even with it, and besides, you cannot be using that much data that you could really benefit from a service as limited as BIS, with next months new data rates, from vodacom at least i will be spending R25 per month for data and will still have some to spare. I baught a 200mb bundle on the 1st and still ahve 250mb left and about 30mb of that was browsing while my internet was off for a few hours on Sunday. With next months R49 for 100mb i will be srted for the full 60 days that the bundle stays valid, plus i can deduct the money from my monthly airtime allocation instead of having it as an additional charge.

If you're on Vodacom, it doesn't :/

Thanks for response, I can only hope that we get better data services in the near future.

Hopefully.

What, the throttling, they started with it. Having loads of problems down here in WCape and heard many reports from JNB, DBN and PTE here on this forums.
