Just make sure you buy a GSM device and remember that their is no warranty here to cover it. Tell him to buy a network free handset, or even just order 1 from amazon yourself and have it shipped to him. My boss did exactly that, got himself a Nexus S for R2800 and just ordered it 2 days before he left for london and had it shipped to the friends house he was staying at, still got his 20% tax back at the airport too.

Nice, yeah thanks for the reminder about that GSM thing, afaik the one blackberry we get is the 9900 and the other netword model is the 9930 so will have to check, sounds like a plan, if its going to save money and not having to worry about the shipping then its worth it...

"Well then what’s the real difference between 9900 and 9930? Here’s what it is, BlackBerry 9900 is a GSM phone which comes with a quad-band GSM and tri-band HSPA+ support where as BlackBerry 9930 is a dual-band CDMA phone supporting quad-band GSM and dual-band HSPA+ global roaming."

does that mean the 9930 will work ??

Sounds like it, but never tried and to the best of my knowledge this is the first GSM CDMA handset to come out, the global roaming strongly implies it will work, but at the end of the day their is no other difference between the phones so rather play it safe. IMHO its RIMS attempt to spice up the market with whats essentially a really kak phone, tiny touch screen with physical qwerty, how stupid can you actually get. That's going to be a bigger ef up than the Storm2
