RIM Strikes Google Deal

BlackBerry users soon will be able to just "Google it" whenever they want. Research In Motion (RIM) announced a deal that will let BlackBerry users access the Google Talk instant messaging service and Google Local.

Google Talk for BlackBerry, which requires users to have a Gmail account from Google, is a version of the instant messaging application specifically designed for BlackBerry handsets. Users can send and receive instant text messages with other members of the Google Talk community.

Google Talk for BlackBerry mimics Google's desktop version, called Google Talk. Users can add, delete and rename contacts, know when their friends are online and available, leave conversations and resume them later, copy conversation text into memory and be notified when a message is being typed.

After downloading Google Talk for BlackBerry, users sign in via Gmail accounts, access existing Google Talk contact lists and see which Google Talk friends are online. Home screens and handsets are integrated, allowing for home-screen notifications of new text messages.

"Instant messaging and local content are two increasingly important areas of focus for mobile applications, and we are very pleased to work with Google in extending these two popular Google services to BlackBerry users," Mark Guibert, RIM vice president for corporate marketing, said in a statement. "Google Talk for BlackBerry and Google Local for mobile will offer additional flexibility to BlackBerry customers in terms of how, when and where they stay in touch."

Gmail accounts can be obtained when invited by another Gmail user or by visiting google.com/accounts/SmsMailSignup1. Google Talk users may invite other Gmail users to their contact lists directly from their BlackBerry handset, just as they would from a PC.

Users can now download Google Local for mobile, which lets BlackBerry users view maps and satellite images, find local businesses or get driving directions. Google Local for mobile also provides draggable maps, directions and images.

Google Talk for BlackBerry is expected to be available this spring.
