Hey guys,

Some of you might recall my predicament with my 8700C from the states, I had a big problem unlocking it to work here in SA. I eventually managed. I then subsequently upgraded to a 8900 Javelin which I am now having a similar issue with.

I think I might be able to unlock it, but my question is actually this:

Is it possible to change the phone IMEI and PIN numbers? I have found the following software: http://furious-gold.com/modules_details.php?module_id=57 which seems to be able to do the job.

Can I replace the 8900 IMEI with my 8700C's IMEI? This is what I am registered with RIM on?

I hope someone understands what I'm talking about, I'm getting frustrated here, I keep having these issues. I'm just going to throw in the towel and go buy another device tomorrow that works in SA.

Thanks as always.

I think your PIN is what's important as well as the IMEI.

I think you'll need to get the unlock code from TMobile and then register the device on the network here. (Or sign up for their unlimited international data plan?)

Do you think if I changed my IMEI and PIN to my old BlackBerry, I would then be alright? The 8700C now works 100% fine in SA and I can use everything here on Vodacom no problem. How do I get hold of the US provider from here? I think they only have a 1-800. I wonder if they'll respond to an e-mail, they didn't last time I tried. I'm only going back to the US end of November.

I mean, why all the complications, it's a real pain in the ass if you want to take your device out of the country?

Use skype. 800 numbers are free. :)

Thanks, forgot about that completely. Will try that tonight, see where I get. I'm still wondering what would happen if I managed to change my IMEI + PIN to my old device? Will it just work as expected?

First of all is the 8900 also imprted phone or did you buy it localy ? if you have bis setup, login to your account and select change device. Pin is hard code into the device and cant be changed. IMEI can be spoofed but not changed as well.

It is from the US.

You can apparently change the IMEI and PIN with Gold Fusion or RadioLabTool. I just thought I could save myself a lot of hassle by simply changing those to my old BlackBerry. It would also mean that the phone would be unlocked to these networks I'm assuming. I tried calling AT&T, they are going to e-mail me the unlock code, but that still leaves me in a predicament with the IMEI.

Do you think I can change it? What do you mean by spoof?

I'm lost now - what predicament with the IMEI?

When you have unlocked the phone you just register it on the network here. My current curve is an old O2 model that I unlocked.

Surely if the phone is unlocked you should just be able to do a 'change handheld' on the mobile site?

Ok, I'm getting myself a bit confused here. If I unlock it, how do I link it with my existing account? Where do I change handheld? This is where I'm a little lost. I initially added a blackberry vodacom service to my 8700C, and basically I'd like to use the same account (same sim) with my new blackberry.

Thanks guys, once again I'm seeing the light... (tend to give up hope with this handset changing countries)

I always register mine from the website http://www.mobileemail.vodafonesa.co.za/ - there's a section for changing devices. Just enter the new PIN and IMEI and it does the rest. Sometimes it picks it up automatically when you log in.

Ok excellent I see that now. Didn't know about that at alll. Hope AT&T sends me the code tomorrow.

Time for a beer.

Muchos gracias

If you change the IMEI of a Berry then RIM will do the honours and block it for you. They would say this is "akin" to "stealing" from them to "not" pay for the data services. The only thing that will ever work then is normal GSM calls and sms inbound and outbound , no mms , no internet because of no data plan.

I had a customer with this and after a good few days of myself , customer and RIM we all decided to just get another Berry.

I wasn't trying to do it to avoid paying for a dataplan. I just wanted to link my account to my new device.

I did read you initial replies and I agree with you. :)

Just mentioning that RIM is a finicky bunch and get all legal on you for things like changing IMEI's and so on.
