So today I came to realize that BB Maps doesn't have voice navigation :(

So now I am looking for another GPS application which does have voice navigation, is free and uses BIS. Is there anything like this out there?

Are you with Vodacom or MTN? Vodacom has Vodafone SatNav which is not perfect, but certainly useful.

but garmap also does not have voice navigation. garmin = garmap?

It's MTN. Where do I download Garmap? On garmap.co.za I don't see an option to download it for the blackberry.

Thanks you for the link & info phoneJunky. I have a question though - are you sure Garmap uses BIS? I see there was some confusion about it in this thread.

Oh and another question: When BIS is being used on the BB Bold 9700, is there supposed to be a B next to the 3G sign? Cause I don't ever see one, but BIS is set up.

I have the Bold 9000 and the BB sign is displayed next to it when I am on BIS, it almost looks like a flag in the wind. Normally when I use a app that don't use BIS the sign goes away, and that doesn't happen to garmap, so I would assume that it is working on BIS. But do check your usage when you do use it.

When Garmap was rolled out then it didn't use BIS and the sign did disappear, so hopefully it was fixed now.

Ah. Then it's alright. I didn't realize that that flag is the 'B'. I'm having trouble activating Garmap, it keeps asking me to sms the activation code to that number. But I'll contact Garmap to sort that out.

Thank you all for your great help.

I have just tried the *123# - 1 - 8 and received an sms stating that MTN Garmap is free for a 30-day trial only.

Am I missing something?

Your advice is appreciated!!

You on a blackberry contract or on pre-paid?

I didn't even get an sms. During install it failed to send sms and now I am stuck with 60 day trial.

Hi All,

the *123*18# option is for MTN users who qualify for free naviagtion compliments of MTN. When you dial the USSD keystring, you will receive 2 return messages, one containing the download link for Garmap for Mobile and one telling you if the provisioning of your MSISDN has been successful or have failed. If it failed, it means that you do not qualify for the 24 month free navigation from MTN, and only qualify for a trial. If you believe that you qualify for the full package (24 months) and your provsioning failed, I suggest you contact 1555 and discuss the matter with them.

All MTN BlackBerry 9800 users qualify for 24 month navigation.

Thanks Mathys! My Garmap Trial has now been bumped to a full 2 year subscription on my Torch 9800. :)
