Blackberry not working. Help

My ma's BB8520 is acting up. Sometimes it's completely dead, sometimes the screen is off and the red light is blinking (4 blinks followed by 2 blinks and repeat).

Anyone know whether this is a HW or FW problem?

Had a problem with my wifes 8520 a few weeks back, just did a power cycle (removed battery) and it took 3hours to boot. Was an update that caused the problem.

If the phone is still under warranty I would then do a warranty claim if the above does not help.

Lots of issues with 8520. The GF's trackpad works when and if it feels like it.
