My mom is due for an upgrade in March. Now her brother is in New Zealnad. I think instant messaging or something is free. Is there a Black Berry she can get here where she can message him free?

Pick a berry, any berry. As long as he has a berry, a ***phone, android or decent nokia then IM is free either via BBIM or Whatsapp

As long as he has a blackberry as well. Otherwise, use whatsapp, works between iphone, android and blackberry.

ok so they will be able to message each other for free on any berry even though he is in New Zealand?

I think the BIS servers only work for people on the same network, so rather use whatsapp to play safe.

You are thinking very incorrectly, BIS is the Blackberry Internet Service created and controlled by RIM and offered as a service by qualifying RIM approved service providers. Your cell provider is essentially a vpn link between your handset and the RIM server closest to you, ours being in Europe. Any and all data traffic is managed by that server, similar to how a proxy works. BBIM and PIN messaging is basically Peer-To-Peer, instead of an IP address it uses the handsets unique PIN number to identify the sources and destinations of messages.
