BlackBerry plan not needed for BlackBerry 10 services

It's good to see them going toe-toe with the high-end manufacturer's although the pricing and the hardware in question leaves a lot to be desired.

Thought this was bound to happen... BIS was way too unstable and unreliable at times.
Stoked I upgraded to Android.

Yes, we kinda got this when they effectively scrapped BIS. Forcing a BB contract would have been a little pointless.

This isn't news. This is just one way to spin scrapping BIS, which as far as I could tell, was pretty vehemently opposed by most BB users. Seems Oscar isn't the only one hiring spin doctors...

I was waiting out the new blackberries. I got a samsung ch@t instead. Only gripe is the low res screen, otherwise cheaper and better than this garbage RIM are pushing.

Z10 looks like a greta device and its was clear from the launch that you dont need any specific bb plan you can just use data bundles as you would on android or ios.

The real question is can you still use the old R60 or R30 BIS packages on the new z10 since those of us not on vodacom or MTN have good experiences with the normal BIS services? Can you guys try top get clarity on this from the operators mybb?

Oh and a samsung chat doesn't come anywhere near a z10,lets not fool ourselves with comments like that

The z10 is proper competition to the likes of the iphone 5 and s3 with a very high res screen with higher ppi than either,a fresh approach to using touch and BBM.I think it will do very well in SA and there are scores of people waiting for it to become available here!

Possibly, although that doesn't make sense since the article is about BB10 and he said "this garbage rim are pushing".

Lol never mind the fact that its not even RIM anymore....;)

Well....he said he was waiting for the new Blackberries...maybe he thought they will come out with a BB 10 budget phone. Dunno...but cant see him comparing the Z10 with the Chat.

Anywhooooooo

Operators aren't saying anything about pricing until later this week. I think the only thing that scares them more than BlackBerry is Apple.

Exactly this, I was waiting to see what happens AND I would have to pay for a data bundle ANYWAY so I've gone for an andriod phone.

Everyone says that this move is good since BIS is so unstable. You will still use BBM and other BB specific services which will go through the exact same infrastructure. I doubt that using carrier specific data will resolve any BB service issues (I guess it will get worse)

I assume RIM changed some things on their network

I currently have a standard BIS contract with MTN , and is on trip in the US.

much to my surprise - even without a valid sim and/or roaming, i am able to connect to BIS via Wi-fi hot spots ( thus the moment i connect to my hotel internet, i receive all my mails and are able to communicate via BBM without any issues (and speed is amazing).

Kudo's to RIM for opening up their network - which i assume is due to them requiring the Z10 to connect via a standard APN back to the RIM servers.

really hope the Z10 gives them a edge

next step - BBM app's on other platforms :D
