This is on my list of must have BlackBerry applications:

http://za.blackberry.com/services/protect/

Not only is it free, it allows one to automatically backup the device with scheduling, has the ability to be locate one's phone via GPS, make it ring really loudly & send messages to it all via a web browser. Most importantly, the device can be locked as well as wiped remotely!?!

This has been posted before

It also kills your battery a lot faster!

Well, I'm willing to sacrifice some battery for the ability to have some control in case my phone is stolen...

I actually prefer BuddyGuard - as it has the ability to send commands via SMS and e-mail and also includes automatic notification if the phone's SIM card is changed. This way, if somebody steals the phone and swops the SIM, the new number sends my wife a message and I can control the phone (such as do a data wipe or GPS lookup) using the SMS commands.

I came out before the BlackBerry protect so I bought it then - but even now I think that is a killer feature to warrant the $4 or $5.

Oh yes, it also includes a flashlight function which uses your phone's camera flash - useful!

- Yes, I have used it for Backups with my B.I.S. account & haven't been charged for data.
- Yes, it is RIM's own application.
- Well, even if someone swops out the SIM, it won't make a difference, because it works with the unique PIN (Options -> Status -> PIN), so it is still possible to wipe the device.
- For a flash-torch option, I use another free application called BerryTorch (http://www.mobihand.com/150/product.asp?id=25627).

Awesome app.
I have it installed.
It hasnt decreased my battery life or maybe I havent noticed.

Can you control it via SMSes? Because obviously if the device is swopped with a non BIS-enabled SIM you'll have a problem...

What if someone steals your BB, switches it on and removes the app themselves?

- In order to control the phone via SMSes, doesn't one need to know the number to send them to?!? When the bastard that stole your phone swops out the SIM, the number changes, but the phone's PIN doesn't
- If the app is removed from the phone, there may be a chance it still would work, as the login & control happens from a web browser which accesses the phone's unique PIN. This needs to be tested. I will try & let you know.

That's the thing - if it uses PINs then it uses BIS, then it won't work withou the BlackBerry service. SMSes though, works on any type of phone plan.

It picks up if a new SIM is inserted and SMSes a pre-set number from the device, thus giving you the number of the guy that stole the phone. It can also lock the phone if it is used with a new sim or without one.

Someone on mybb mentioned locking their bb remotely and not being able to unlock it...is the lock feature permanent?

I have to agree wonderful applications BLACKBERRRY protect love the new improvements when logging in fromt he web you are able to set a "message on your phone" in case they steal your phone

Same here, no notice of change in battery life. With SmrtGuard I did notice a slight drop. I also started to notice a lot of specials coming from them soon after Blackberry Protect as launched.
