It cost me twice more than the whole flipping trip (overseas)
Why doesnt anyone warn you
I thought i was being good by not phoning and limiting my sms and not having e mail
Mean time i was being charged every flipping second R2.37 for roaming GPRS ( I was gone a month so work it out)

then "roaming mobile Originated" ???? varies from R7 to R20

And then they hit you with whoppers like R250 2770 kb went on search once, and of course took photos?
Its probably my fault for not finding out, but its not fair, and how do I warn others
I am still sick in my stomach...

You would think people would know by now not to use data overseas, switch it off or buy a local sim.

Blackberry has a "Always On" data connection. Even if you dont use it..it will send and receive small little bits of data every now and then which you will be billed for. BBM dont use all that much data unless you are sending pics and vids etc with it. Being gone for a month though of course these would have added up though to give you a whopper of a bill. Considering that many countries charge R128.00 per meg. My mom and sis went to Thailand this month and my mom had a data bill of about R300.00 and my sister also of about R300 for data if you take off the R1000 she used to make phone calls.

Data rates etc is published on the Vodacom website and there is a warning also:

Data Roaming
Please note that roaming data rates are significantly higher than local data rates. Please read carefully to understand what the rates are for the country you are travelling to.

Always buy a local sim, it has been discussed on this forum before.

DOnt worry, they still not done, it can take up to 6 months to bill you for overseas usage. You could find roaming charges on your next bill too.

As for why they don't warn you, erm you have to enable roaming before you leave else the sim simply wont work, if you don't bother to check the costs before you leave or make a free call to vodacoms help desk to check what costs are involved then its your own fault, sux, but you the one leaving the country and enabling roaming so its perfectly safe for them to assume you know whats going on too.

I am sorry, i have family that travels a lot, so i feel no sympathy for someone who willing enables roaming and allows their berry to use data while roaming. My family as as technologically clued up as a cup of coffee and if they had the sense to not spend R2 per second then i don't see why you should even be starting this post.

On a recent trip my fiance wanted to use her sim overseas if I remember correctly when she called the help desk to enable roaming they emailed her t's & c's which she had to look at and then call back and confirm that she understood & accepted them.

Yes that is one way, you can also just sms roam 123 to some number and it activates automatically.
If you dont enable roaming before leaving your sim wont work outside sa and you need to disable it when you return else it wont work here or you just carry on with roaming charges.

Just had a similar experince. Purely through ignorance....

Joined this ship in Singapore where I had to spend a coupla days - left the BB on. The bill from MTN at the end of June was bind-boggling. Silly me, thought BBM was free everywhere. Fortunately this ship has an onboard wi-fi system which has a satellite link to the internet. Logged the 'berry in and now I have 100% free BBM, e-mail etc in the middle of the Gulf of Aden Pirate Zone.

Be warned, overseas travellers. Find a hotel or location with a Wi-Fi hot spot and BBM away for zilch or else pay!!

There is a huge misconception when it comes to BBM that it is free everywhere. This is owing to the way it is advertised mainly, but I have had to explain to quite a few people that BBM can send messages overseas, but costs to send messages WHEN overseas

Lol, data costs as much as R150MB when roaming.
Use the free wifi in the hotel
