Blackberry Storm OS upgrades...

This is my first post in this forum, so HI THERE!

I have been following the thread on "Why is Blackberry internet so slow" ( http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=177519 ). After many of the internet speeds were resolved around 30 July (read: many people stopped complaining) I was still dissapointed with the Storm's performance. Vodacom has a zero rated OS upgrade .141 available on their website, and this is a remarkable improvement on the .078 my BB shipped with.

Last weekend i upgraded to a .164 version found on the web. I believe this will sort out a lot of problems, such as the memory leaks etc. Where my Storm used to hover at about 32Mb or less of app memory, it's now constant at 45Mb and battery life, 3G reception and performance overall is much improved. I manage to run a number of apps like viigo, twitter, browser, satnav, and more at the same time and NO lag!

I know upgrading to an OS not signed by Vodacom is risky, but if any of you guys would like to try it, I'd like to know what you think...

The only glitch is the diagnostic software that RIM included. Named Quincy, it can either be disabled in menu or from the desktop software.

Update to .164:

You now have nice shortcuts for the clock and connections menu, direct from the home screen. Just click on the clock in the home screen and go there, so you can ditch the icon to free up the home screen.

Custom themes are still questionable, I would not try them just yet. there has been reports that people don't get sms and email notifications with custom themes.

I have Quickpull scheduled to do a simulated battery pull once a day, but now it seems uneccessary since I don't have any memory leaks.

Screen lock much improved over .141 and a lot faster.
 
Just so you know, there is an official release that was released a few days ago which is newer than .164. I think its .196, you can find it on www.crackberry.com

I couldn't find a .196 OS for the storm, only the 4.2.2.196 that works with the Tour, 8830 etc. Could you please specify the link?

The OS 5 that's been leaked is causing most to pull their hair out, that's why many are either going for the .151 and .164 systems. There is a .167, but is reported to be slower than .164 with no real advantages.
 
thanks for the update, ushir! I read through the crackberry site a bit further and a few complaints popped up, even though it is an official release. Also it doesn't seem to be much different than .164 so I think I'll wait a bit on this one. Do you think someone has any word on an OS5, not the sticky leaked ones but an official Vodacom release?
 
OS5 is not planned for release any time soon. I believe I read it was only scheduled for release next year some time. Blackberry Messenger 5 is available which works very well - it does however have some inherent bugs, namely that some messages are delayed or delivered out of order. I believe the cause of this is that Blackberry runs a seperate server to process the BBM5 messages which is a bit buggy.
