Blackberry vs Other smartphone

Why would one buy a Blackberry ? What make it so different to a smartphone, which also does mail ? Can you phone from it - or is it only email?
 
What I can tell you about the blackberry is it has fast push email and a rock steady OS. They have all the usual features of a smartphone because they are smartphones :)

Vodacom's r69 per month for unlimited data does hurt either. :D
 
The package is pretty nifty ... Blackberrys have quick connections?

I see the Samsung i600 is HSDPA 1.8mbps
 
I think the fastest available (in SA?) is EDGE.
 
I was thinking of getting a Blackberry, but the main reason I can't is because it doesn't have document editors and there isn't any decent GPS software available. It has document viewers though.

The other thing is there isn't as much third party software for them when compared to other platforms.

I've only tried the google maps app and the blackberry one but Vodacom's SatNav looks pretty cool - have you tried that one?
 
My friend has one and I am very disappointed with it. It is a mediocre smartphone, it does have push email but so does every other smartphone, and it is lacking on every other front.

I think the BB popularity is the case of RIM caching in on the fact that they were the first with push email, and that they have clinched the market when it comes to enterprise integration.

Kinda like MS Windows - far from being the best OS, but is used by almost everyone. I was flabbergasted with the number of blackberrys in the USA - every working person has one!

It does look cool, and I know the advantage of using software that downloads maps on-the-go is that you'll always have the latest maps. But if for some reason you can't connect to the map-server, you screwed! :eek:
