my search fu wa not good enough so I've resigned myself to starting a new thread.

My phone was recently stolen, so my dad gave me his old Blackberry Bold to use until my contract renewal at the end of the year when I will be getting a new phone.

The only thing is I don't have a BIS subscription nor do I really want one. I have a data package on my contract that is currently going to waste because the bloody phone refuses to connect to the internet without BIS, and being a Blackberry noob I can't find where to put in the settings to just use regular Data charges. I tried using vodacoms *111# to get settings sent to my phone that will automatically install but that failed.

Can anybody help me set up this phone to use regular data for browsing?

Take it in to your service provider and ask for it to be flashed to their ROM. This will give you their browser which is set to use that specific SP's network as opposed to using Blackberry's that uses the BB network. You could also try to download a 3rd party browser (perhaps try connecting it using wireless to get the initial connectivity).

Check in options if you using it as hotspot browser which basically means that it will work only through wifi.

If you go into your phone settings and enable the ANP and set it to internet then you will have some internet functionality, but a BB is essentially dependent on BIS so your internet functionality will be limited.
The browser should work, but no email or BBM.

Cancel your data bundle. Activate BIS. Sorted.

Change back around when you get a new phone.

I can get it to work using the phone's wifi and connecting via my my adsl line, but that kinda defeats the purpose of checking internet on my phone. Will try download another browser to see if that works, otherwise will do as Kix suggested and just switch over to BIS for the next 3 months, though I am loath to go through the effort (I presume I actually have to go into a vodacom outlet and can't do it over the phone).

If you on contract then you need to call 1555, prepaid just dial *111# and activate it under the data menu
