Hi,

I'm thinking of getting a Blackberry 8520 or 9000.

Any preferences on which one I should get?

Also, if I did not do the BIS for R 60 odd per month, can I still browse and receive emails with normal data use through MTN? Or does one need the BIS to connect to the Internet.

Please let me know .... data use is just the odd email, and I'm not sure I want to pay R 60 pm for that.

A blackberry without BIS is like a car without petrol - kind of pointless really.

Thanks ... that's what I thought ... so you can't access the internet on normal data included in the bundle (non BIS)?

You can use a non bis bb to surf, but that's it. None of the push services will work, no email etc.

I had mine this weekend while waiting to get BIS activated, you can do normal browsing and such but its like any other and I was regretting the phone. Then BIS came alive and a whole new world opened

Yeah... i have my my BB for 5 days and the damn vodacom contract has still not been activated, so i am still on a prepaid sim card. Don't know the internet settings so the phone is for the most part a brick :( The reason the vodashop told me its still not activated yet is that everytime they try it wont activate. I currently have a 32k sim and the next thing to try is to do a sim swap and get a 64k sim card and see then if it activates.

Surfing is fine on a non bis BB. Just enter the networks APN under advanced options -> tcp.

For email though its a bit trickier. Vodamail can be accessed though vodafone live (0 rated). You can install the gmail app if you have gmail. But beyond that it gets sketchy. I googled a bit and came up with some apps but none of them work or at least i couldnt get them to work.

Its not really worth having a Blackberry if you dont get BIS/BES. Rather get something else.

I couldn't go without a Blackberry. Its become a necessity. No mobile email solution comes close. Haven't checked out a Nexus One yet though, but I have my doubts.

i got a BB 9000 from my girlfriend today
try to set up hotmail e-mail acc on the phone but after i go into SETUP from the MENU, I cant find the PERSONAL EMAIL SETUP icon
is it because i dont have BIS??
will i have the PERSONAL EMAIL SETUP icon and setup my e-mail once i purchase BIS?
