A few answers to ease the pain when these devices break as to what they are , why would you need them , can you get spam on them and so on.

1. To get it you need 2 things viz a Blackberry (TM) handset or a Blackberry Connect enabled handheld with the correct version of Blackberry Connect for that specific phones firmware & then you also need a simcard with the BIS/BES service.

2
BIS

2.1
This is Blackberry Internet Service , what you get is all external pop/imap email that you can link to the Blackberry and the pop "client" that you use to do this is either http://mobileemail.vodafonesa.co.za/ or http://mtn.blackberry.com.

2.2
You can also add / remove accounts from your Blackberry handheld (this option will generally be under Setup) on the Home Screen.

3
BES

3.1
This is Blackberry Enterprise Service , what you get is all email that comes to your Outlook mailbox assuming you have an Exchange Server at your company.

3.2
You then install a Blackberry Enterprise Server and there you can manage your users and even set policies and lock down the handhelds ie no outgoing calls , no BIS accounts ie Gmail / Hotmail / other 3rd parties and so on and so on.

3.3
You will see your Calendar , Inbox , Outbox , Sent Items and what you send from your mailbox you will see on the appropriate folder on your Blackberry and vice-versa , this is called Wireless Reconciliation.

3.4
BES supports upto 2000 users and is available in 2 flavours ie BES 4.1XX & BES 5.00 and is also available for Novell Groupwise & Lotus Domino , see http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/server/

4
Troubleshooting ie what broke , why is no email coming through & how to fix?

4.1
Service books for BIS , generally speaking you will have 2 of them for each BIS account ie [email protected] - CMIME & [email protected] - CICAL. To see this you goto Settings/Options -> Advanced Options -> Service Books.

4.2
Service books for BES , generally speaking you will have quite a few of them ie ...
[email protected] [BrowserConfig] - Contains settings that are used by the E-mail Settings icon to create a new BlackBerry® Internet Service account or maintain an existing one.
[email protected] [CICAL] - Contains information that is required for BlackBerry wireless calendar operations.
[email protected] [FileBrowserConfig]
[email protected] [SYNC] - Contains information that is used to wirelessly synchronize organizer databases and to wirelessly backup and restore BlackBerry smartphone data.
Note: The BlackBerry smartphone must be running BlackBerry® Device Software 4.0 or later and be connected to a BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 4.0 or later.
[email protected] [OTASL] -
[email protected] [MDS] - Mobile Data System
[email protected] [IPPP] - Contains information that is required to use and browse the Internet using the BlackBerry® Mobile Data System (BlackBerry MDS).
[email protected] [CMIME] - Contains information that is required to send messages and perform functions such as wireless email message reconciliation.
[email protected] [BBIM] - Contains the record information that is used to send instant messages with an enterprise instant messaging service such as Microsoft® Live Communications Server.
